New SOLO pally, questionFollow

#1 Aug 07 2008 at 3:18 AM Rating: Decent
Well, I already have a Holy Pally with my friend, but hes not always over here, so i made one by myself. But, before I go too far in, I want to ask what I should use, like 1 hand/shield, or a two-hander. What tree is the best for one that will mostly solo (I was going to go Prot.)Just want to know.

Choices:

1. If you want to level really quickly doing quests go down the ret tree.

2. If you want to take on 4 mobs and like the idea of aoe grinding go down the Prot tree.

3. If you want to level slower then ret and not be able to take on as many as prot, go down the holy tree.

Prot and holy you will usually use a 1h and shield. Ret always a 2h unless for some reason you are tanking something or healing.

Paly can do anything pre-lvl 50. I leveled to the 40s with Ret. From 40 to 53 I've been Prot. As a Ret, I was able to tank and heal instances. I only noticed a lack of healing when I entered BRD. So... My guess is that pre-BRD, you can fill any role without spec'ing for it.

That said. Ret is considered the fastest leveling spec. I'd suggest 10 points in holy, the rest in either Prot or Ret. The 10 points should get you +INT and lessen spell knock-back. Both will keep you alive longer.

As you have healing and judgements/seals to generate health, Mana is more important to keeping you alive. Make sure to take the +Int and not the +Str...

If you spec Ret. Get a good 2 hander. If you go Prot. (Which is a lot of fun) Just make sure you get a 1h wep, a shield AND a shield spike. Google "Paladin, AOE" and learn to do it. It's fun and pretty easy (Compared to doing it with my mage).

I personally suggest you go Ret until you hit the 40s. It's fast and easy. Then respec to get Prot & AOE.

My questing has been plently fast, you still have the ability to burn down mobs, and I've been able to solo several elites that were 3+ levels better than me. My best yet was a lvl 63 Huntard jumped me at Marshall's Point. I lost, but it took him 5+ minutes for him to kill me. that's 10 levels above me.... (yeah, i know a huntard)

I agree, ret leveling is pretty easy. You punch through mobs quickly--not as quickly as a rogue, but still pretty fast. You also have good survivability, and between bubble effects, healing spells, bandages, stun effects, and lay on hands, I can solo most elite quest mobs as well without too much trouble. I find if the "suggested players" is 2, my pally can drop the boss. If its "3" its borderline.

Small tip for pally soloing: (sorry if this sounds really obvious) if you overpull, or for some reason have to bubble-heal against a tough mob, bandage inside your shield then throw off a quick Flash of light or two. As effective as a couple of holy lights, but uses next to no mana, leaving you free to commence the retribution smackdown. Ret paladins will go out of mana quite quickly compared to a holy/prot leveling build. Learning to manage mana usage while chain killing quest mobs is a very fast way to level.

I say ret all the way, but you can't deny being a prot paladin porcupine is a huge amount of fun.
