Hi! I'm almost to 70, and have been steadily replacing most of my gear, yet I find I still am wearing the same damn breastplate of retribution from HH. Advise!

Are there any outlands non-instance quest chains I can hit quickly to upgrade my chest slot?

What non-heroics should I target to get a good chest upgrade?

Are there any rep rewards that are a good upgrade?

My current armory:

upgrade advise on other slots (especially those that contain greens) is welcome.

Well, a minor upgrade would be to have a blacksmith make you an Adamantite Breastplate
http://www.wowarmory.com/item-info.xml?i=23507 which would probably hold you until you hit 70. Easier than instance grinding and better for Ret anyway. Once you hit 70, it will be obsolete fairly quickly though. You could also go with the bracers and gloves for a full set. They are all BoE, so an Armorsmith has to make them, but anyone (who wears plate)can use them.

Edit: I notice you have the bracers already, the gloves and breasplate would be upgrades for you and would complete the set.

um, in my ret guide i put a bit of effort to make sure the gea guide would give you options from non-instance, instance and heroics. double checked my list (which i highly recommnd you check out..) and the best chestpeice you can get before raiding/heroics (unless you're an armorsmith) is the ragesteel breastplate. it is a good amount of mats, but certainly worth it imo. in my opinion the ragesteel set is on the verge of being epic for us...

Oh duh. I read your retribution guide for speccing and strategies, but apparently did not look at the equipment section very carefully at all. Thanks :)

As an aside, you feel that master hammersmith is better than master swordsmith for PvE ret pallys? I'm close to making my teir 1 blacksmith weapon, and am currently sword.

EDIT: and how do you feel about the honored rep pvp-leaning rewards (scaled crusader's etc) as a stopgap gearing list?

honestly, i would recommend the maces over the swords for now if you're alliance... keep in mind the expansion is only a few months away. when that comes out alliance will get seal of the martyr (blood) so the stun proc will be much less attractive. swords will likely be better. at the moment though, if you're horde swordssmith is good. if you're alliance, hammersmith is better.

i personally don't like using pvp gear for pve content... however, that aside, if any peice of pvp gear has more strength and crit than what you currently have then its an upgrade. the rep pvp gear was added more as a way for us non-pvpers to get intro pvp gear rather than to add pve options i think. i personally would recommend saving the gold and investing it in the mats for the ragesteel set. or just farm the mats if you have mining with your blacksmithing.

oh, if you really like pvp, grab the rep pvp blues and bg your way into merc glad gear... considering you can get it w/o a single heroic/raid it is (sigh) the best intro gear you can get at 70 to start raiding. its good enough i've been crying cause until my guild can start doing ssc/hyjal i may have to stat pvp'ing for merc gear.. i'm just getting as much badge gear as possible for now, trying to put of the dreaded AV....

one last thing, if you go to maxdps.com and put in your stats it'll sort out all kinds of gear by how much it'll add to your dps. i won't say its 100% accurate, but it is pretty good. definitely worth consulting as a tool.

the beauty of pvp is that you can save up from lvl 10. if you played 1 BG everyday since you started leveling, you would have enough honor to buy your chest piece. even if you hit the HH or Terokkar pvp daily, you could rack up some serious points without any killing. my priest had 15k honor as i dinged to lvl 70...consider it free epic gear.

to answer your question: some of the best Ret gear is acquired through pvp. Merciless Gladiator's Scaled Chestpiece will satisfy you til you start raiding.

You don't have to go near the "dreaded" Alterac valley either, the Merciless Gladiator's Scaled Chestpiece requires 40 Arathi Basin marks, and 14.5k honor.

If you detest pvp *that* much, merc gear will be incredibly painful to obtain of course.

I picked up mine today, to complete the S2 armor set! A pair of +10 strength gems, and a +5 strength/+5crit rating gem. I hit like a truck.

lol, yeah, i know the merc gear is good. when S1 was the gear available with honor i didn't recommend any of it except the weapons. merc glad gear is enough better all the way around that you actually won't find upgrades in eve tha early raids. i'll still get my badge gear first and then fill in the remaining spots with merc gear as needed. currently i'm shooting for the baddge axe, chest, then legs at least. i have quite a few badges to get before i start worrying too much about pvp gear.
