My Crowning Acheivement Thus FarFollow

I successfully tanked Heroic Shattered Halls tonight. Wewt!

In the last three days, I've found myself running the heroics for the Naaru Trials series (now-obsolete TK attunement series that grants Champion oft the Naaru title). For Shadow Labs and Steamvaults, we ran with a prot warrior MT and me as dps/off-tank. Why off-tank a 5-man? Mostly because that's the group makeup we had and going bear made up for my abysmal lack of crowd control for the larger pulls. As a matter of fact, our heroic SL run was prot warrior, feral druid (me), BM hunter, balance druid, and holy pally. We managed the large pulls in Blackheart's room with a combination of one trap, cyclone spam from the balance druid, me picking up mobs going for the healer, and just generally a chaotic mess, but we got it done. Heroic SL with no pally tank and only one "real" cc class? Heh...

We ran heroic Arc early this afternoon...same prot warrior tank, me, another feral druid, hunter, and holy pally. Arcatraz doesn't really have any large groups to pull so it went fairly smoothly. I wasn't expecting to do heroic SH tonight (had arranged with our raid MT...prot Pally...to tank it for some of us who needed it but it was AV weekend and he spent all weekend on his warlock >.<).

I was encouraged by our previous successes and decided to give it a shot anyways. Prot Warrior wasn't able to go on the run, so it was me, hunter and holy pally from Arc, warlock, and elemental shaman. The warlock refused to use his succubus for CC, prefering instead to sac her for the bonus to shadow damage. Hmm...well...umm...can't boot a guildie >.<

So that left a feral druid tanking heroic Shattered Halls with only one person willing/able to really CC anything (the Warlock was spamming fear with mixed results). We cleared the notorious room before the first boss with one attempt. We wiped on the second boss (the one after the gauntlet that's only there on Heroic) when he spawned 2 extra mobs on top of the healer right as I charged in. We wiped once on Kargath. Then we downed him (one hostage sadly did not survive, but we still got credit for our Naaru trial quest and the quest you get inside the dungeon to rescue the second hostage).

All in all, I was most pleased.

Pally tanks...pffffffffft ;D

(I kid... <3 pally tanks...but still...pfffffft)

:D

I've got very far through it but some of the pulls are impossible without masses of CC, it's horrible

I (feral druid) once tanked H Shattered Halls with only 1 hunter for cc. We made the timer too. :)

If you're past the second boss on heroic, the worst is by far over. The warlock in the group died repeatedly...I didn't feel too badly for him...between choosing fear as CC over Seduce and overnuking on a regular basis, he kinda brought it on himself. We struggled on our first attempt at the gauntlet because the warlock went down early (don't stand in the flames!) and we lost the benefit of his dps on the two non-elite adds that spawned just as I engaged Porung. The biggest benefit for us was focused fire. I can hold 4-5 mobs on me through some fairly large heals, but I can't hold them if 2-3 of the targets are taking dps as well. It took a couple of firm reminders to get everyone on the same page about that, but once we got it down we cruised through the rest of the dungeon. We opted to skip the Centurion/Gladiator pulls until after we were done the timed event, but we went back and did those as well.

I was definitely nervous about tanking it with limited CC, but we pulled it off. I don't expect that I'll be going back any time soon, but score one for feral druids against the, "zomfg u need pally tank for taht!" crowd.

You haven't lived until you've attempted to moonkin tank.

That's a wild adventure you won't soon forget.

PS: Note, I said "attempted"

There is a guy on my server who can moonkin tank, has around 27k armor and about 13k health when he does it. Gearing panzerkins is absolutely insane. The best I've done is tank normal SP.

The sad thing is they're going to nerf resilience vs pve in WoTLK so you can almost say goodbye to all those awesome panzerkins.

That statement is wrong, I have tanked all heroics as bear, whether there's 3cc, 2cc, or 1cc. As long as you know your job and make sure your team communicates well. Anything can be done.

I tanked Kara as moonkin and tanked a few of the heroic as moonkin as well. I like moonkin tank better than my bear tank, but it is the perception of people that is bad. All of those are pugs party who were skeptical but once we finished and we do finish way quicker than normal tanks due to boomkin damage.

All this moonkin tanking talk is making me want to go play around with boomkin tanking builds.
