I wrote about this a while back when i started with the pally but cant find the post, is it benificial to have spell damage on weapon and shield only? I notice that it is recommended to get gear such as felsteel which has no spell damage, how would that effect my threat? Also what would be the minimum spell damage i need to hold threat? I currently do 5 mans and wear gear such as "of the wizard high lvl 60;s, i do have the crystalforged sword. MY pally is najdorf on illidan server horde

If you're going to tank beyond regular 5-man instances, you need to transition away from a spell-damage set into a defense/avoidance set. Right now, you are probably doing a great job of generating threat, your DPSers love you, and you burn through mobs fast. It is probably rather difficult for your healer (if he's at the same level of gear and experience as you) to keep you alive through fights, particularly longer ones. Switching to the "recommended" gear will indeed drop your threat generation (but if you already have the CFS, it won't drop it too far!) but your gains to survivability will allow you to succeed in more advanced content. Your DPS can always dial down their damage, but healers can't necessarily surge their heals to keep you alive through crazy boss spike-damage.

Experience has shown that for prot pallies, the optimal balance of spell damage and defense will come from specializing +spell damage on your weapon and maybe shield, and from +defense (and +parry, +dodge, +block rating) on your armor.

Losie's Pre-Heroic Tanking Sticky is a great read for practical info on this topic, but I also strongly recommend ThelsDeKwant's Defense and Mitigation sticky if you can handle a deeper but more abstract explanation of how you will gear yourself.

Yes, I looked you up, definately check out Losie's guide. You look more like a Holy pally who's decided to got Prot and only change a few pieces of gear. Grab the Merciless mace from PvP and put +40 spell damage on it, you will be able to swap out just about every other piece of sorcerer gear you have. If you are still running regular 5 mans, 250-300ish spell damage should be fine, and just the mace and enchant puts you at 265.

Bottom line, your current gear is great for building hate, but not so much on the survivability, checking out the stickies mentioned will guide you down the correct path into heroics and Kara.
