Question About Marks Hunters and Their PetsFollow

The setup: Kara run with an over-geared for Kara group looking for badges. Someone asks if he can bring his hunter alt which is Marks spec and no one has a problem with it.

We start and I notice Mr. Marks doesn't have his pet out. Others also notice and someone asks why not. He says it gimps his dps if he has to control a pet. The BM hunter in the group (often at the top of the damage charts) whisps me that the lazy @#$(%*$ has to stop taking crack before raids.

Who is right?

The BM hunter. When I was MM/SV for raids before I saw the light my pet was out. How can something constantly attacking gimp dps? The MM hunter is a moron if he thinks it doesn't help. He can do dps without his pet, but none the less the pet still increases his overall dps

I did my first 6-8 raids of Kara as a Marks Hunter. Morris did nothing but help my dps. He couldn't tank anything in there but the 'normal' (non-elite) mobs which were few and far between, but he still gave some flexibility. Pet control 101. Morris and I have not wiped a Raid yet. <knock on wood>

That MM hunter was just lazy.

Now that I'm BM hunter my overall dps is higher but my personal dps tends to be just a shade under what I did as Marks, occasionally it's more though. With the pet, it's not even a contest. I drop a target noticeably faster as BM than I did as MM. What kills your dps as an MM hunter is when you are tasked with doing interrupts or other MM specific roles. Then timing becomes critical and you can't just mash the macro button. BM is basically easy mode. Shoot and control the pet, maybe move about some times.

There are only a couple of situations where pet control is a bit of a bother and they aren't common at all. I still use Morris even in those situations. That player needs to learn some pet control.

What kills your DPS as a MM hunter is your spec, the talents clearly favor BM hunter for DPS. Thousands of threads and millions of words written on this topic. Diehard MM hunters have seen that the math doesn't support the spec and keep quiet now. I still see trueshot aura quite alot in PUGs though, so they are still there.....

DPS is just hitting buttons, as a BM hunter I am mashing a macro, but I am also watching cooldowns, monitoring threat, hovering over FD, popping trinkets, switching aspects(not often I hope) and getting ready to switch targets and resend pet before I start the pew pew again. Pretty much the same as playing any caster class most of the time I suspect, although I haven't played any other class above the 40's.

If you were in a position of power you should have told him to get his pet out or hearth out.

MM hunters suffer from a fatal flaw.

They think in terms of PvP as they do PvE.

When MM/SV and arenaing or bging, 90% of the time your pet is dead or CC'd. As BM, you take care of the creature since its roughly 15% of your overall dps.

Your MM hunter was a special breed of stupid.

Dubya Tee Eff? Control? Send pet in to attack, pull pet out of AoE. Ya, tough job right there, might need 2 fingers to push buttons...

I wasn't Aethien, it wasn't my raid. But the raid leader may have whisped him as his pet was out soon after. I was running recount, and he knows it as he has run with us before on his mage, so he asked me to whisp him the damage results after a while. He was at the bottom, and said "Oh wow, I'm not doing too good."

I will know now for the next time though, that Marks hunters' pets should be out.

Thanks everyone for answering what must be, judging from your answers, a pretty easy question.

As SV, with my only pet-buffing talent being Go for the Throat, my windserpent averages 17% of my DPS through a TK run.

As BM, same pet and roughly the same gear, it was more like 25-30% depending on where I was. Even getting to 45% if I was being lazy soloing.

Not using a pet is just stupid.

You should always be using your pet regardless of your spec.

If your BM pet is only doing 15% of your damage, you're seriously doing something wrong. My wind serpent pet can easily do 30-35% of my overall damage while I'm doing a 3:2 or 1:1 priority rotation.

...

I guess a turtle might put out such low DPS, but if you ever see a hunter bringing a turtle to a raid, kick 'em out.

For kara hes being lazy. For say Archi or Illiden, its just a waste of mana to keep rezing a MM/SV pet because of all the splash fire damage.
