Hi, I arena 2's and 3's with me a frost mage a lock and a rogue. My question is, what is your normal starting routine for that first initial rush into combat. I currently buff AI on me and the lock, dampen magic on everyone, and frost armor on myself. Then with 5 - 10 seconds left before the gates open I cast ice barrier then invisibility.

We do ok, usually win about half our matches, but I feel we could do better. I also feel that with an all dps team, getting a jump on the enemy is essential to victory.

Is there anything different that you guys do to give you a better jump/advantage on you opponents in arena?

Well, for my team (mage - rogue), with 7 seconds left, I pop invisibility. My partner stealths and I put no buffs on him (until I'm in and out of invisibility, then I pop a dampen magic on him). This leads others to believe it's a rogue/druid or rogue/rogue group and they do some different things. By the time I get out of invis, we have a dps target and a sheep target. I then pop W/E and he attacks the dps target, I focus on the sheep target, kiting it/sheeping at inopportune times. If I were better at arena, we'd be a better team because the rogue is very good.

I pretty much suck at arena, but I'm in there trying each week, anyway. Long as I get 10 games in this week, I get my S4 gloves on Tuesday :)

I've found that sheep is generally a wasted effort in arena. Seems like everybody has some easy way to break it, and they generally like to gang bang the mage anyway. I've taken to introducing myself with PoM Pyro, Fireblast, and then either Ice Lance or AM, hoping to blow some guy out fast, so we then get a 2v1 on his partner. It's fun when it works.

Pre-match, I use molten armor on myself for the crit boost, AI on me and partner--in theory I think it is supposed to help with stealth detection even for non-casters. Also put dampen magic on myself and partner. I summon a mana emerald...you seem to be able to use summoned items in arena as long as you do the actual summoning in the arena. If there's time, I'll throw up a table, too...doesn't burn reagents in arena, and you can use the biscuits in there. At 10 seconds to go, I pop mana shield on me, and sometimes mount up for faster movement at the start.

Opening with PoM/pyro will set you up for failure.

In the higher brackets. In lower brackets you can still catch plenty of people by surprise by throwing a big nuke their way before trying to turn it into a "lets try to take everybody down very slowly and do a burst when the healer is CC'd"-fest.

Instead of laughing at me, why don't you offer some tips?

Like I said...pretty much everybody I sheep in arena breaks it immediately. They have a trinket, or
some other ability, and the spell is blown. If I try to resheep, I'm prolly gonna be dead before I get any damage in at all. Meanwhile, if I lead with PoM Pyro, I might be able to burn somebody down quick.

Sure people can trink out of sheep, but that's the point is to make them waste CDs. That's why alot of the times I'll cast sheep twice in a row. There's nothing more fun then to have somone trink out of your first sheep only to get smacked by another one. If I'm in 2s and fighting a war/druid with my rogue then I'll sheep that war all night long untill that druid is dead. Get a mod that lets you know what your DRs are and sheep away.

And leading with pom/pyro is a bad idea. It's a killing blow move, not a opening move. How many times have you ran out there and blown it only to have a healer heal them back up? Plus after you blow it any decent team will know that your useless now and just eat you up. Just keep it macro'd as a "I Win" button and either use it to fininsh a guy off or atleast blow it if your about to die.

OK, I'll give that strat a try.

Problem is, in 2v2, I'm almost always about to die. 3x3 is better, but harder to find teams.

In 2v2 it's key to find out who your fighting before they know what your setup is. If your rogue/mage then you can hold back and let the rogue go check out the other team. Then you can plan from there. It's always good to have the rogue open up first then you show up asap. Then you can get a sheep off and they won't even know your there untill it's too late. If you find out your against a duel stealth team then I like to hit invis and go hide in their starting area untill my parter can locate them. Just remember to be ready to head to the fight as soon as somthing happens.

This will all change, of course, depending on your team makeup and who your fighting against. Also remember that sheep can be a good counter spell as well. Here's a classic combo against a priest. CS (4 sec with imp CS) cast a sheep after 1-2 sec of CS, then spin up another sheep as soon as that one lands in case of trink. You can lock up a healer for 10 sec this way and you only need around 5. With your ele out hitting the DPS target and your teamate on the DPS target this is a sure kill for you guys.
