Rolling a Warrior Finally- Need InputFollow

Hey guys...

I made a thread a few days ago in the general forums regarding solo/pvp play. I was (still am) considering rolling a toon specifically for pvp play and I've been itching to roll warrior since '05. I've had several endgame toons pre bc and a warlock in tbc who dinged 70 before I took a break from the game last month.

The more I look into warriors though, the more I get that itch to be a true endgame tank, rather than just pvp. I really like the class, and the only reason I haven't rolled one yet is b/c i was always a melee in the past in mmo's. With wow, I wanted to try some new things.

If you guys could answer (or try your best to answer) a few quick questions, I think it would really help me narrow down exactly what my longterm goals would be with this new roll:

1) I've always been a "power gamer" in the sense that I pick my race/class/profession combos based on what is "the best". It is my understanding that for BOTH pvp and pve, the majority of people would consider a Tauren to be hands down the best race choice for a warrior. However, I've been dying to roll an Undead War. My question is- how viable would an undead warrior be for endgame pve? I'm obviously aware of what foresaken brings to the warrior table in the pvp aspect of play, but I'm curious as to how beneficial this race choice would really be when it would come time to spec prot and get into some serious 10+ man content later on. Further, what are your thoughts on UD vs. Orc. vs. Tauren in general? Just trying to get some fresh opinions on this subject ...since my wow experience really does not help me out on this front.

2) Ok- so let's say I get 40-50 levels into my warrior and decide "ya know what, I'm really enjoying tanking and I've found a good solid group of people to play with longterm. I'd like to tank endgame as opposed to just pvp'ing @ 70". With Wrath of the Lich King coming out in the next few months, how would this work out for someone reaching endgame shortly before the launch of the expansion? I see myself getting "caught in the switches" of beginning tbc endgame and then boom- expansion drops and now it's time to level again and move on. I don't however see any real conflict here though...but I'm more curious as to how irrelevant ALL of these tbc 70 instances/raids are going to become when Wrath hits shelves. Obviously when TBC came out, virtually ALL Azeroth endgame became utterly irrelevant. Are we anticipating a similar situation this time around as well? There are just so many factions for rep and so many instances now- hard to believe they'll all just be skipped over at that time like scholo/strat/ubrs etc are today.

3) Regarding professions- I have a 68 and 70 toon that I'll be realm transferring over to whichever realm I roll this warrior on. Money is no issue at all- I have 300+ professions on these toons and have quite a bit of gold. I would assume that mining/blacksmithing would be the ideal choice for a PVE focused warrior...however, my REAL profession interest has always been in mining/engineering. Engineering would bring many benefits to my warlock in pvp...this I know. However, I'm curious as to how Engineering would benefit a plate wearer like a Warrior in pvp. Further, I'd like some clarification that mining/bs'ing would in fact be the ideal choices for a PVE focused tank.

These questions are the ones really in my way right now. I've been around this community a very short time but already, I couldn't imagine asking these questions anywhere else. I value the opinions and expertise here. Any input is appreciated and will be enjoyable for me to read. Any additional input/advice regarding this roll would be welcomed as well.

Thanks guys

Hi there.

At the risk of being mocked mercilessly, I'll add my 2c worth:

1. Yes the Tauren is always going to be the preferred Tanking warrior, but being able to play your character will always be a better indicator of how effective your tank will be in end game. If you can keep threat, protect the squishies when they do something stupid and rotate abilities then you will be wanted in end game content, whether you are an orc, UD, tauren or troll. If you're a bad tank then being tauren will be no help at all. Skill > Gear > Race

2. We'll never really know what will happen to these instances until WotLK comes out. My guess is that getting groups together for them will be difficult (imagine trying to get a group together for AQ40 now), but we will simply have to wait and see.

3. I'm a miner/BS, and yes it does help with tanking. The weapons or armour (you have to choose one or the other) you can make are certainly better than anything you will find until you get into high level raids, and sharpening stones, weight stones and wards will always be useful. It's especially useful if you do have lots of spare cash as it is very expensive to level (much like Engineering). I would personally opt for weaponsmithing as you can create a very nice one hander for tanking and a two-hander for pvp, which I see as being two top-end rewards whereas armoursmithing only gives one uber-chestpiece which while very nice is more suited to pvp/soloing than tanking (no defence, no dodge, no parry etc). I'm sure other people may disagree. However engineering will be more useful to your alts, and the lock will not benefit from BS at all. I've not levelled eng at all so I couldn't comment too much on this. If you read the pre-kara checklist sticky you could get a rough idea how BS compares to Eng in terms of gear, but I haven't done the calculations myself.

1) Tauren is preferred for tanking due to the extra stamina. they're cool for PvP because of war stomp and because they're fricking huge. however, if you want to maximize PvE dps, then Orc is the way to go because of their axe racial and Blood Fury (?) racial ability.

2) Blizz has said that they don't want the gear gap to be as large in WotLK as it was when BC came out, so you can chew on that. also, depending on how your guild wants to do things, TBC endgame content might not be completely in the past. my guild will still do TBC content on a regular basis (though probably on a reduced frequency, like twice a week) when WotLK comes out just so we stay sharp and raid-ready.

3) BS/eng is probably one of the best (if not the best) combo for PvE warriors. both professions allow you to craft many high quality items (BS: Bulwark of Ancient Kings, Hard Khorium Breastplate, Dragonstrike; eng: furious gizmatic goggles + their SWP upgrade, goblin rocket launcher/gnomish poultryizer = cheap darkmoon faire card, goblin bombs are fun in PvP) that you otherwise might not have access to. for instance, i had my Furious Gizmatic Goggles well before i even set foot into T5 content, and it's comparable to the T5 helm from Vashj.

Instead of making a new thread and being yelled at by theo XD I'll just ask here. Taking a break from my 63hunter. Was wanting a horde toon especially for wotlk. Warrior for me is my favorite horde class. They just look really mean. My question is Orc or Tauren. My main thing is solo play. I love to solo. Occasionally group for instance or to help someone out. But more solo play.

As leveling as war I've been told arms 2h was best for leveling. Just wanted you alls take on it since I listen to you all more. Thanks for those whom reply.

Hi Souliken.

I think you want to see previous posts. Tauren = War stomp and a bit more health; Orc = Blood Fury and Axe racial. If Axes get the Boost that is expected in WotLK then I think Orcs will pull away from Tauren for pure dps.

However going on the looking mean aspect I think a ruddy great tauren wins hands-down.

BS might be good for DPS warriors, but it kinda sucks for tanks. anything you can make, you can get something better in an instance.

blizzard has said they will address this in the expansion, but i would definitely go mining/engineering instead. the helm is awesome and the trinkets are good too - both items you can use at endgame.

I'm actually torn between orc and tauren as far as looks for a warrior. Both look pretty mean all geared up.

RE: Engineering

Tankatronic Goggles are pretty sexy for a warrior if you are an engineer, as is the Gyro-Balanced Khorium Destroyer (BoE though).

Don't forget Hardiness... 25% stun resistance in PvP is very good.

Yeah, that's a matter of preferableness. Imo, taurens and orcs look just as good. And ofc they own all other races!

I actually am quite happy as an alch/eng.

The alchemy give a great trinket in the guardian alchemist stone, and the ability to make my pots and flasks is very nice, and helps keep costs in control. Engineering gives some great toys as well as a few genuinely awesome items, the googles are as good as anything you'll see prior to t5.

I used to be a NE warrior, and absolutely hated the way he looked in gear. I'm a human now, and I like the way he looks in his tank gear a LOT more. He just looks bulkier, which is how a tank is supposed to look to me.

I still wish I'd rolled a gnome though, damn it.
