A Radically Different Restokin Equipment QueryFollow

#1 Jul 25 2008 at 7:46 PM Rating: Decent
I have 2 Druids; a Level 70, currently Feral and a Level 44 Restokin.
Both are skinners with the 70 a believe-it-or-not 375 Spellfire Tailor*
and the other a LW. Note I also have 70 Lock, 375 Herbalist/Alchemist,
spec in Transmuting.

I had planned to have the Level 44 Restokin go Tribal LW and make
the Wind Hawk Set (Wind Scales already farmed). But it also occurs
to me that I can make the Spellfire set for the other guy** and make him
the Restokin. This would I think put a little more Boom in the Boomkin
part of the Restokin build. Is this whacked or plausible ? I am using an
awful lot of cloth now fwiw on the 44 Restokin at present.

*A Long, Boring, Story.
**who would respec of course.

The Spellfire set will help Starfire and Moonfire, but not Wrath. Unlike mages or warlocks, Balance druids can't really get away with specializing in one type of damage.

Raiding strictly as a doomkin, spellfire tailoring is better than tribal leatherworking. However, as a restokin, the healing from the windhawk set much better, and you're less likely to strictly be using Starfire like a raiding doomkin is.

For 5-man groups ad stuff, I'd stick with lw.

Keep in mind that a restokin's role in a group or raid setting is more often the "resto" part rather than the "kin" part. Considering this it might be more beneficial to switch your 70 to a mooncloth tailor rather than spellfire. This is assuming that your 70 would then switch to restokin. The primal mooncloth set is much better for pure healing than the windhawk set. Comparing Primal Mooncloth Robe with Windhawk Hauberk, you can see that the mooncloth item has a huge increase in +heal and more mp5. Also worth noting is the set bonus for the primal mooncloth set; the additional 5% mana regeneration while casting is great compared to the flat 8 mp5 from the Windhawk set.

That being said, the windhawk set would be a better choice as far as dps goes. But as previously mentioned, you don't roll restokin to dps in groups at 70; you roll it to heal with the ability to dps more effectively than a tree, which isn't saying much.

Roll a moonkin tank. It's the craziest adventure you'll ever have.

I have now played my Restokin for 3 levels and some of the things
you all are alluding to are very clear while there are others I
hadn't quite figured out yet. If I understand things correctly a
Restokin Druid like my 37/0/24 build may have more Boomer than
Tree talents but in a group he's gonna be a healer. Didn't see
that coming but OK. (I was thinking more DPS than heal)

So what makes sense to me is to have my Level 44 Restokin add
Mooncloth Tailoring for groups instead of Skinning but keeping
the LW for solo play. That means the other (Feral) Druid is still
a Spellfire Tailor and skinner but, oh well. :)

One other thing. This build seems to have terrific damage mitigation
even when my armor base is cloth. Are these guys ever used as an
emergency meat shield in a group ? Not suggesting they can tank but
with some help they could postpone some bad things for a bit.

To clarify, chances are in regular 5-man instances you will be in a healer role just because there are fewer healers to go around. You probably won't get denied a dps spot if you really wanted though, in a regular instance people will just see that you have moonkin form and assume you dps.

However, In heroic instances, you probably will only heal. Your dps won't be as high as a fully specced moonkin and, unless you have a really nice set for dps, you likely won't put out much more damage than the tank.

For raids, you won't fill a dps role, a fully specced moonkin druid will put out way more dps than you. And honestly, past a certain point in raid progression you probably won't even have a spot healing as a restokin.

Yes, moonkin druids are even sometimes used specifically to tank in some encounters. Moonkin druids are used to tank Blindeye in the High King Mulgar fight. Moonkins also have main-tanked some encounters as a novelty item. There are videos out there of moonkins tanking Gruul and Prince, but again, just as a novelty.
