I'm decked out in complete lamellar gear (was a shockadin) and have respec'd to prot. Any ideas on how I can get proper gear without jeopardizing a group in heroic instances? Or should I treat this like I'm a brand new lvl 70 tank, and just run regular instances until I get to 490 defense rating?

It would help if you posted your toon link, but going off the info I can gather...
Your 70 and have respec'd to prot and are looking for gear.
Best shot? Respec back to Holy and heal instance to get your prot gear. You will find your shopping list in the Def/Mitigat Sticky.
There is a list for pre Kara, and post Kara. Just let people know that you are running to get Prot gear and will be needing it. Most people are more than happy to help, more so when they get a good healer in the group.
I'm doing the same thing, but reverse. I'm prot building a holy gear set :-)
And don't forget, it's 490 def AND 102.4% avoidance. Be a good idea, if you can do it, to have a good 12k health too.

That thought did cross my mind -- I think I will go back to holy/ret until I get the proper tanking gear together. Thanks for your advice.

You can pick up the Felsteel 3 piece set. The Aldor Breastplate if you are Aldor and a Crystalforged Sword and Shield of the Wayward Footman, off of the Auction House, which while not epic will give you a decent base to build around.
