Improved Aspect of the Hawk/DPSFollow

Well I haven't followed the cookie cutter raid spec yet as I haven't started raiding. So instead of improved aspect of the hawk, I had endurance training to help my pet tank all of my quests.

Well I finally decided to throw it into Cheeky's spreadsheet and holy cow I crit my pants. My DPS (according to the spreadsheet) went from 864 to 902 with a simple respec (8.5 of the dps increase was from my pet with animal handler as well). All this time I've been trying to get the next piece of gear that gives me 4 more DPS here and there and for a few gold I could increase 38!!!!

Now this post isn't all about me finally giving in to the cookie cutter build, but I am also at that point where I want to test my DPS for real. So I know Dr. BOOM is the dude to go to. How do I go about finding out my true DPS. What addon should I use and how long should I shoot the poor dude.

Should I shoot until I am out of mana? Should I aim for a certain amount of time like 5 minutes (or some other time) and do whatever I can to sustain my shots whether it being pots, viper etc?

once again, thanks everyone!!!!!!

I use recount, and yes I go until I'm OOM to see how long I can hold up that dps. The only downside is I assume you're testing out a BM spec, and your pet will get rocked if you send it in, therefore your actual dps will be higher than shown. I guess this is true for all hunters, since your pet does add some dps regardless of spec, but it impacts a BM hunter more than most.

As to your spec, they call it cookie cutter raid spec for a reason. It has been tested, tweaked, argued about until the cows actually did come home and then everyone decided no matter what, it is the BM spec that gives you the most dps.

Cheeky said (in a post on TKA) "The talents are very well understood."

On to your question:

When I go to boom I use recount, which is what I use all the time anyway (helps to see if someone is not pulling thier weight in heroics, allows you to see if guildies need a little advice, ect.)

Checking to see if a major change has a given effect, go to boom, ping away for a given amount of time or ammo (easiest way is to only put 200 arrows/bullets in your quiver) and look at recount. Do not pop trinkets or BW and Unequip any proc trinkets and your SSO neck if you have it.

For crit based stuff and really small changes or to check macros you may need a much larger test. There is a post here where someone tested sharpening stones (Mulgrin I think) to see if they had an effect on ranged weapons, if you can find it and read it you will get all you need to know. I am lazy though and usually just read the forums here and TKA and follow cheeky's.

since I am sure everyone is dieing to know.....here are my results:

Myself only (b/c spot would have went boom otherwise)

Original spec (non-cookie cutter) and no macro
573.3 DPS for ~95 seconds for 54,948 damage until OOM

Original spec (non-cookie cutter) with shot macro
635 DPS in ~94 seconds for 59,438 damage until OOM (FYI, cheeky had me at 628 personal DPS so thats pretty close)

New Spec (cookie cutter 41/20/0) with shot macro
598 DPS for ~96 seconds for 57,308 damage until OOM, felt like some lag issues (Cheeky has me at 655 so I did it again)

2nd try
662 DPS for ~93 seconds for 61,308 damage until OOM.

3rd just for fun
658 DPS for ~90 sec for 58,968 damage until OOM

did some other tests and got ~600 a couple times and 690 one time, I am guessing that is due to the combination of lag and the variation in the aspect of the hawk procs (and my Don Santos procs)

All in all, Cheeky=good, cookie cutter spec = good and macro = good (not like this is news to anyone, I just always have to feel things out for myself)
