Found this on the Elitist Jerks Forum
is this really worth it? i mean, shouldnt you allready be at the defense and avoidance cap allready?

i fail to see how a 'Warrior tanking weapon' would be better in this case then a 'Pally tanking weapon/Spelldmg weapon'
can anyone shed some light on this ?

Spell damage weapon or not?

Spell damage weapons are a fact of Protection Paladin life. You will nearly always be using a spell damage weapon, as the amount of threat you gain through using one is so large that the minor amount of mitigation or avoidance you gain by using a normal weapon can not compare.

However, you should nevertheless keep a good alternative avoidance weapon around for situations in which your threat doesn't matter much but your survivability does. Situations where this is the case are far less frequent than situations in which you'll need your spell damage weapon's threat, but they do occur. One of the best examples of a situation like this is being the tank on Fathom-Lord Karathress.

Typically for a spell damage weapon more spell damage is better, outside of the stamina the weapons might come with the other stats on them are largely useless. Spell hit and intellect do both have some minor use, but are not important enough to make them something you should seek after when choosing what weapon to use.

Defense cap yes, avoidance cap no.

Uncrushable is the minimum amount of avoidnace needed to avoid crushing blows completely.

A large part of your avoidance is made up of block, Holy Shield give you 30% block for example. This means you are still getting hit but your block value and armour mitigates that hit.

Now if you raised your dodge/parry/miss (pure avoidance) enough to push block off the table, then theorectically you would never be hit.

So in the case of the post, there are occasions when threat is not an issue that it may be feasible to have the extra little bit of avoidance instead.

i see, thnx for clearing this up :)
so best for this would be something with lots of dodge/parry rating and loads of stamina (assuming you dont get under the defense cap by switching weapons offcourse)

but then.. wouldnt you be better off with more avoidance 'warrior gear' then just a weapon?
or hell, let a warrior tank karathress and you take one of the adds.. ^^ ?

When in prot spec, I actually run with mostly warrior gear and about 3 pieces of palatank gear + weapon.

Against a boss you really want max avoidance/stam since they hit bloody hard. At the same time, you need the spell dmg to keep threat up so it's a all about balancing the two.

In a fight where you can get a huge threat lead that overaggroing isn't an issue, you can swap over to a tank weapon for extra avoidance. Remember that you can swap weapons mid-fight, not armour.

And yes, if you have one warrior tank and one palatank, the palatank should just take ALL the adds. At that point you don't need max stam and avoidance, you want a lot of spl dmg and block to generate healing threat to aggro the mobs and then reflective threat once they start hitting you.

Long discussion on the subject. Lots of other information as well on different topics. I'd pay particular attention to Ialaman's posts in there.
