Hunter survival sub-spec to balance bow and melee?Follow

#1 Jul 24 2008 at 8:49 AM Rating: Default
This is the first time I have really gone to the forums about my survival hunter, and I have played to lvl 41 with an equal mix of agility, strength, stamina, and attack power, with minor amounts of intellect. I am mostly survival with a bit to beef up my pet. My play style is to set my pet on a target (My pet does well holding aggro) but if there are multiple enemies, as in an instance, and they come at me, fine. My sword works well and my stamina keeps me alive and I fight alongside my pet. My sword crits are high, my sword damage is high, and that is as much fun as using my bow.

I am bringing all of this up for discussion because this seems to be very different from most of your survival sub-specs that are put out for discussion, and I would like to know if anyone else has successfully used a similar play style, and how it would work as one progresses toward end game.

You desperately need to read the FAQ at the top of the forum.

Multiple targets = frost trap and feign death to have the targets go back to your pet SLOWLY. Only time I use my axe is A. when skilling up a new weapon. B. To wingclip an enemy target. C. When I am in arena and it is down to 2v1 or 3v1 just for the fun of it.

Str is not needed @ 70 mine is liek 61. We are not Rangers like in FFXI

I second the FAQ. it doesn't work and it won't work. This type of play is what coined the term "huntard"

So is that a one handed SWORD or two handed SWORD?

Cause if it is one handed then you should use a shield so you can take more hits..

Please read the FAQ, your eyes will be opened. Unless you are on an RP server and your character is imitating a LOTR or D&D ranger, you'll jeopardize any serious group you try to get in with. Hunters in WoW: Think Legolas with pets, not Aragorn.

Yes they can too train shields, they're also the flat out best tanks in the game!

They're kick **** healers too - why once I ended up healing the last half of a Mag run with my hunter when all the healers died. Then the MT and OT got triple critted and so I had to MT and heal while my pet OT'd. It was a good thing I had invested those talent points in being able to wear plate and use maces or the raid of wiped. ;-)

I've actually seen a rogue ask in trade channel where he could train two handed maces. I smugly told him to go to the Paladin trainer for that one.

I am not sure this is a serious thread ?

Seriously though if you have read the FAQ at the top and still insist on playing the way you say you do then i feel sorry for any that group with you.

Yes hunters can hit fairly hard with hand weapons but as i know well with multiple mobs my health drops fast and my attacks get interrupted at least 50% of the time , so it is a very bad idea and you should be setting traps and using wingclip so you can escape melee range.

I assume you are using the Survival talents , if so you should rarely use hand weapons except as a last resort , i would have expected you to mention traps but you said nothing about them ? .

That is why i am guessing you are not being that serious as i doubt in any instance you are the right level for that you would survive melee with elites as even just one would kill you very fast and your damage to them would still be minimal.

A survival hunter helps the group they are with by keeping the others >alive< , is not and never can be a tank even an off tank , your pet and your traps used properly can make the groups lives easier , crowd control is your aim as a survival hunter , never melee.

This is not uncommon. I have PUGed many a time to find a hunter meleeing (I mean SLabs and Shatt Halls too, not just VC). It originates from too much BG I think, this is how you play in BG, shoot til melee gets to you(usually a gdamn rogue, sneaky children), at this point PVE hunter will wingclip, frostrap, and generally do anything but melee to get to range. But a leveled hunter with little instance experience will melee with a rogue or warrior often. Then of course they go into an instance, shoot first or pull aggro a couple of times, melee all over the place and use volley and get kicked out. Back to BG for more epics cause groups suck and are mean. Try to help them please, if they come out with the "lol, I know how2p you noob" then you kick them.(I have never got this response by the way, my /w have been ignored though.)

Please don't name your Night Elf Hunter Legolas or Legolaz or Legollass or LLegolas or Leggolaz or Legollaz or Logelaz or........

Thankfully its been six months since one of my toons ran an instance with a melee hunter. I was more amazed the party leader let him stay.
