Leveling with subtletyFollow

Ok, I'm going to ask a build question so try not to get too worked up. I have done all the required reading BTW.

My rogue is level 31 on a PvP server, so I consider myself to still be a noob with the class and with PvP. I have mainly focussed on leveling and have only played some BGs (although I ramping up so I can acquire some better gear). I've put most of points into Combat as most people have suggested and am not having any problems leveling, aside from the odd ganking :) However, I've noticed that many of my guildmates are putting early points into Subtlety instead (I call them the Ghostly Strike fans). None have given me any great reason for it yet (I won't rule out it being a case of follow-the-leader) but all seem to happy with it.

I'm just wondering if anyone can comment on the merits of the Subtlety builds for leveling and BGs (as compared to Combat Swords). I'm tempted to try the build myself to see if it helps me in PvP but I thought I would ask first.

Well for PvP the advantage is obvious. 5/5 MoD means you're a lot more likely to get the opener, especially if you're say level 25 in the 20-29 bracket.

For leveling... Combat is supposed to be better, the only real advantage I can see here is that you can use ghostly strike rather than SS, making it easier to fight multiple mobs (until you can get blade furry that is).

some people like the burst damage.
Put 2 points into remorseless attacks, and 2 points into improved ambush and 5/5 opportunity and you have huge ambush crits. after killing a mob, the next ambush crit is guaranteed.
Its a decent build to level with, not the best for instances but at low levels it doesnt matter quite as much. personally if i didnt go combat, i would go this route until i could pick up mutilate, then i'd go down the mutilate tree and use that until 70.

(I actually did level mutilate 63-70 and i loved it because you took very little damage, fights took less than 20 seconds, and usually less than 15, and it was great in pvp before resilience).

Not to nit-pick (and maybe I misread this, but I don't think so), you can't spam Ghostly Strike. I think the cool down on the ability won't allow it.

Basically, GS won't replace SS.

Now that you mention it... Still, it lasting 15 seconds with a 20 second CD you can keep it up most of the time when facing multiple mobs.

I think you were saying:

"GS can replace A SS in your rotation when the CD is up"

I believe I misunderstood what you were trying to state.

Well combat is "the" fastest leveling build, but we are built for damage, any of the 3 trees I personally believe will make negligible leveling differences.

I did my rogue combat until I could get ShS and then just went 41 in sub so I could BG whenever I wanted to and save gold on respecs. With a CS..KS..Hemo spam PvE, they die very comparable to a combat rogue, maybe a tad slower. Factor in having preparation, cheat death, and premed, and youll live a lot longer and be likely to take on some of those 2 man elite quests by yourself with 2 evasions, a blind and some bandaids.

So if you want to level sub so you dont get ganked in world pvp as bad, do it, I personally (others may disagree) think that time wise you may spend an extra 2 hours 1-70 being sub over combat (number outa my *** but u get the idea).

Why are we even discussing this again?

The fastest way to level is with some early point into assassination (except 2 points for imp SS of course), then respect combat to get BF and swords spec. You don't need MOD to get an opener on a mob or to do quests. And I really doubt that Prep/Premed will serve you better pve-wise than a combined AR/BF with all other combat talents.

Bottom line:
- pve: you're doing the right thing with combat, stick to it
- subtelty is a good tree and will allow you to pve decently, but not as optimal.

Veena,
While levelling my rogue I would respec to Sub to BG at each x9 for a while.
Once I had finished grabbing what gear I wanted I would respec back to Combat/Swords to level again.

The difference between the two became more marked with every ten levels.
Sub became better and better for BGs and Combat/Swords became better and better for levelling.

Occasionally I would continue with Sub for a level or two of levelling, but it was much slower as a levelling spec and got worse as I gained more levels (in relation to Combat/Swords).

The most significant difference for me came with adds and overpulling. When I got adds as Sub I would tend to Vanish and start again, as Combat (after getting Blade Flurry) I would just kill everything and move on - this meant I would tend to intentionally overpull whenever any of Evasion, Blade Flurry or Adrenaline Rush were available.

I wouldn't say the occasional benefits from being Sub in world PvP would make up for the greatly increased rate of killing that you can get as Combat/Swords.

If gold is not an issue I would respec at x9 to Sub to run BGs then respec back to Combat Swords to level.
