Ok so I am having a great time with my paladin and I wanna thank all the experts on here for answering my questions so far but I am still a young pally (in my twenties) and I am super excited on taking the challenge of raids and doing heroics etc... I CANNOT wait to do my first raid because I love challenges. SO ....I am going Protadin but leveling ret thanks to cap jacks helpful faqs and links...I am pretty sure I got the idea of what stats I am going to need throughout the game BUT would it be safe to re spec to Prot at lvl 40 or should I wait till 50 thru 70 sometime to re spec? I am a little nervous on finding people who will help me through raids and such so is there any certain order I should tackle these raids in? I am going to be a raiding newb and I do not want to go in unprepared seeing as how I will be vital in keeping aggro AND I do not want to waste other players time. I am going to be need stats such as STR, AGI, STAM and going to need high percentage of dodge, block, and parry correct....Do i also need to look for spell dmg and also what trinkets or end game gear do I need to shoot for for doing heroics? thank you for your help guys...Just wanna make sure I can be a great pot pally for raids and heroics!

You need to read this:

Losie's Guide

It's a sticky :) Tells you most of what you need to know.

As a highlight - you need a threat meter. Something like Omen is very common.

Your still a long way from raids and heroics, but it is great to have end goals. I am a young Paladin (level 45) and I have not found any problem tanking (or healing) as ret so far. Unless you do a lot of instances (>50% your experience comes from them) I would suggest jsut staying ret until outland instances. This is just my personal opinion and may not work as well for Paladin's as it did on my Warrior, but one way to be a good tank is learn to succeed tanking as an off spec. Then when you do switch to Prot, it will seem like everything just went to easy mode. Just a thought.

I played as a Ret all the way up to 61, and had no real problems at all. I was going to STAY Ret for the most part, buy my guild has a few other Paladins that are just a few levels behind me that want to stay Ret, so I respecced to Prot about half way through 61, and have been tanking Ramps and BF since then for practice. At first I did this with "guild only" groups with at least one person that knew the dungeons well and could mark pulls for me. Then I started doing some PUGs and marking targets for myself. I have gotten good reviews from the PUGs I have done so far... so now it is time to do some research and get some guild help and start on Underbog!

Tankadins seem to be in REALLY high demand lately, but even if that is the way you want to go, being Ret until you hit outlands won't hurt you a bit. If you do go Prot after that, there are numerous places to study up on the dungeons (and later the raids), and being in a good guild with some people that have already "been there and done that" (and are willing to teach you) helps tons too.

Until you hit outlands, just put on the best gear you can for your level without breaking the bank. Once you hit outlands, start keeping the quest rewards and drops that give you the best stats for your chosen tree.
