dps vs overall dmg?Follow

Hey. So my guild wants all dps classes to have a minimum of 1000 dps before we start t6 content, but for the most part, we're not all there yet. They post our data on wws after every raid, and I never seem to fare too well. I'm raiding affliction for malediction and shadow embrace so I understand I won't be topping the dps charts, but my question is how do I up my dps? And is there a difference between dps and overall damage done? Because I thought I was doing fine. My damage meter showed I was always in the top 10 of overall damage, but then my guild master told me my dps was way lower than it should be, so I'm pretty confused. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Affliction DPS is skewed in something like WWS. Depending on the fights it can get pretty high or pretty low on an overall scale while being pretty consistent actual damage. Things like WWS use "DPS Uptime" to calculate your overall DPS, a way to factor in things like while rogues are completely DPS off and running away from Leotheras' whirlwind. Affliction specs tend to have nearly 100% DPS uptime, even if it's not full on DPS. Even if you can't keep on the mob entirely, it's pretty easy to keep something like siphon life up and I know that that used to put my DPS straight into the basement.

dps is average damage done per second over X duration (entire instance, just trash, just a boss etc... if you use the dps figures you get for a boss fight they're likely to be more accurate to what you can do than the figures over the entire instance.. which'll take into account time spent idling)

overall damage is well... dps * time spent in combat * efficiency rating of using said time

the efficiency rating is there because nobody can use 100% of the time spent in combat purely for dpsing, but they can get close. the highier your efficiency rating the closer you'll get to maximising your damage done

now to up your dps... firstly try not to waste time moving; getting into place; canceling spells etc.. all these types of interuptions lower your dps.
2ndly. keeping a VERY tight dot rotation is para-mount. as I presume you're a UA lock, keeping UA, Cor and immolate up is necessary (don't worry about siphon life, and seeing as you're on CoE duty you should have no issues with that, 5minutes is plenty of time to not care ^^). to improve your dot uptime, don't wait for UA or immolate to run out before recasting them, when they get to 2-1.5 seconds to the end of their dot cycle, start recasting them.. BUT (and this is a big BUT) NEVER cancel casting SB to start re-dotting. if you've started a spell, finish it. also if you've just finished casting SB and you're at 3-2.5 seconds to the end of the dots... DON'T wait. cast a SB, and then redot. wasted time = wasted DPS (though if your mana is getting low, or you think you need to reposition yourself or something.. lifetap/darkpact/move instead.. the time isn't being wasted this way either)

umm.. otherwise... get more +hit if you're not capped, get more +dmg/+shadow and the main law of good dps. DON'T WASTE TIME

I hope this helps :)

be careful when you say "top 10 overall damage"
lets just go average and say in your 25 man raid you've got 3 tanks and 7 healers, that only leaves 15 dps spots. so being 10 out of 15 isn't very good, especially for a lock. Like above, make sure your spell hit is up.

for a full affl lock it is about rite.

with the newer badge rewards the huntards will have about 1200-1400 dps, destro locks 1400-1600 dps, mages 1200 dps, SP 1100 an affl lock 1000 dps.
