Pets in aggressive modeFollow

#1 Jul 22 2008 at 8:20 PM Rating: Good
Since my hunter is a bit of a BG ho, more often then not its pet is set on aggressive thus resulting in it usually charging off and attacking a a random mob when I land somewhere to harvest a herb or do the fishing daily.

As such, I inevitably get this vision in my head of my hunter running up to her pet as its trying to eat the random mob, grabbing it by the scruff of its neck and shouting "Bad Brighteyes - bad! Spit that clefthoof out right now!" and perhaps giving Brighteyes a few wacks on the nose with a rolled up 'AGI V' buff scroll till he lets go of the mob he's attacking and it scampers off.

Just a silly random thought to share.

I almost always have my pets on aggressive as well , my reasoning is part RP and part farming , the pet likes to kill anything that may be a danger and as my hunter at the moment is hunting for any ore deposits along the way to quests it means i can relax and just watch out for my pet to veer off to attack some unsuspecting mob .

My pets always seem to know which trash mobs are carrying good drops as well and usually ones i would not bother with , resulting in many blue drops i would not normally have got .

Biggest downside is getting places always takes twice as long but so far has never got me killed.

My vision in my head is that my pet befriended me but is still a wild beast doing what it does best and that is ambushing its enemies .

I do always have full control anyway and am always surprised more hunters do not try their pets this way , a simple "stay" or "follow" or the normal "attack" can always be used to over ride your pets aggressive nature.

My view also is we have the ability to set pets on aggressive so why not make full use of it not only in a BG but in normal play , i would not advise using it unless you are ready for anything though , and sure as hell not in groups unless the group says ok , but for me in buildings i love it , let pet attack set trap call pet and get to a position you can shoot always is more fun than getting bashed when you are trying to get into a position where the mob is not hidden from your shots or is right on top of you with no place to back away , i had that yesterday when i forgot to set my pet on aggressive and tried to get into a building , the result was 3 mobs on me before i could do anything other than back out fast while setting a trap , the next 3 buildings all i did was set a trap outside let pet do its thing and call pet , the result was less health lost and 3 very dead mobs .

If any of you are like me in enclosed areas where by the time i have seen the mob it has already seen me having pet on aggressive means the pet usually attacks the mob first and results in me not losing any health , but it does mean you have to rethink your game play a little to get the best out of it .

Ohh and yes it was quite an amusing thought !

I don't even keep my pet on defensive in a BG let alone aggressive. I want total control on who my pet attacks (usually the healer). I don't need him wasting his dash on that other hunter who clipped me with a multi.

And when I play around with my pet on aggressive, he make take off for a mob that I don't want to attack....ok no problem I hit follow he turns around for one sec then takes off again after the mob. I have to spam follow otherwise he does this constant yo-yo action.

The only time I have my pet on aggressive is when I'm farming lower level instances for greens for my alts, and even then I have to make sure he doesn't kill things without me getting a shot in so that I get to loot it. Otherwise, I never use aggressive stance. I don't PvP.

I think I can count the number of times I've had Morris on aggressive on one hand.

BG's I do defensive so the first incoming shot lets me know who's tagging me. I then target that target and help Morris dps down the threat. If some else has chosen to pick on me, he goes after them once that target is down. It's a pretty good combination and gives me a read on order of folks hitting me.

Raids are always passive. Arena was start on passive but switch to defensive after first target selected.

Only time my pet is set to aggressive is when I am in arena against a team I can't trap. throwing a flare down with frost trap, and having a pet on aggressive is a good tool. The minute they pop out though pet is changed off of aggressive mode.

LOL - sorry. ;-P

As for what setting - in the real world I prefer to have him on defensive while instances its usually passive but in the BGs, I'm all for doing as much damage and creating as much chaos as possible so I'm perfectly happy with him eating as many gnomes, dwarves, NEs, humans and space paladins as he wants. If there's someone special I want him to eat first then it's a simple case of pointing him at the preferred target and once its dealt with, let him go back to playing on his own.

I mean common folks, think about it - the poor pets spend all day going after what we want to kill, standing around doing nothing while we chat or do tradeskills or 'taking one for the team' while we play dead or run like hell.

As such, I feel they deserve a chance to get out and play, to be able to do thier own thing every once in a while, blow off some steam and have a bit of fun for a change.

That's why I leave Brighteyes on aggresive in the BGs - its not like I'm doing anything important - just PVP - so he's got a right to have some fun.
