dual wield weapon questionsFollow

Hello everyone,

I am aspiring shaman (lvl 57 atm) and I've been enjoying the job immensely. I'm Enhancement spec and I read in these forums somewhere that dual-wielding maces was ideal for that style of combat.

Now, I understand that I'm only 57 and I probably haven't reached the point where this is apparent. I did dual wield maces pretty much since I dropped the point for it, but I've been thinking about dual wielding daggers. From my limited understanding of how it works for us, it would seem a faster weapon would have more opportunities to proc WF and criticals, which, at least for me in a PvE setting is essential for my survival.

Maces, I have seen give better damage when they hit, but if you don't get a critical hit, it can seem very slow between swings, esspecially against caster mobs, where hits can buy you time to the next Earthshock and keep the mage shutdown.

I looked in the Shaman FAQs, but couldn't find a reason as to why dual wielding maces works out so much better.

Any info on this would be helpful to my understanding.

Thanks :D

Daggers are a no no sir, wf has a built in 3 second cool down so it WILL NOT proc any more wfs then a slower weapon (slower meaning mace or axe or fist weapon).

The reason many say slower is better if you look at two weapons of the same level one slow one fast both same dps the slow weapon will have higher top end damage. This means your wf and storm strike attacks will hit much harder Example:

fast sword weapon (AVG dmg 80)
http://thottbot.com/i19968

slow mace weapon (AVG dmg 107)
http://thottbot.com/i19961

this is before stats and I know we cant use swords take it as an example. your wf and storm strikes with just weapon stats alone will on average hit for 27 more dmg. WF and SS equal a good portion of shamans damage and require less melee hit to land a blow then a regular melee attack, these are important reasons why you want to make sure your yellow damage hits hard it contributes a lot of your damage.

I heavily suggest slow weapons, it is even a rumor that level 70 green slow weapons do more damage then level 70 epic daggers and i have heard this so much and looked at some of the weapons and I can see where this would be a fact. Just stick to your slow weapons and you will do fine don't do daggers people will call you bad and technicaly you would be =P

Definitely DO NOT use daggers. You want slower weapons with speeds between 2.6 and 3.0 seconds. This is explained very well mathematically at this elitistjerks guide

Thanks for clearing that up for me, guys. Well, guess I'm sticking with maces... (just wish I hadn't bought a couple of dagges - d'oh!)

Well, its for PvE so I doubt anyone will care. I'll get maces back at 60.

Thanks again! :D

What you really want aren't necessarily just maces, but anything slow. 2.6sec or slower is good. Some maces are fast enough that you don't want them, just as are some axes or fist weapons (and every dagger).

I believe where maces specifically came up was blacksmithing spec, where the crafted maces happen to be better than the crafted axes.

I don't know how big difference it is between fast dagger and slower weapon. I was thinking about it when I got to outland with my shammy and got first outland weapon being a dagger from quest. If the dagger has alot better dmg than a mace/axe then how big the difference should be to get dagger instead of slow weapon? I know that there is maybe no percent value or something to determine this but just a question.

Well I specced resto anyway shortly after this and maybe will respecc back to enha since groups for instances at that level are living hell I tell you. At least I need to be over geared and 2-3 lvl's higher to keep those people alive even in ramparts :@

A good, slow weapon early in Outlands is kinda hard to find. I ended up mainhanding a slow weapon and just reserving myself to slower damage with a dagger enchanted with Flametongue, and grabbed a decent 2.6-speed fist from the AH that I equipped asap.

you can purchase boe weapons with slower speeds even if they are green they should be better dps then a dagger for you just the way shaman works.

Just something to think about when you hit 70 and start getting badges. I picked up the SSO Badge offhand Fist Weapon for 45 badges (103dps 2.5 speed) and the mainhand pvp Fist Weapon 18,000 honor and 20 EotS marks. (97 dps 2.6 speed)

For 45 badges and a few days running BG's these two weapons are a huge upgrade from a lot of the weapons you will be using on your way to 70 and you'll notice a large increase in dps and they are also the correct speed we are looking for in our weapons in order to proc windfury correctly and have a strong Stormstrike.

Go ahead and check my armory, name/realm are in sig. With that gear I can pull 600+ dps in 5's and 10's easily. Even when I drop Wrath of Air or Windfury for another member of the group. (oh yeah, mongoose x2 is the way to go)

This is a solid plan and as soon as you have 105 badges you can pick up the main hand badge weapon.

Most fist weapons are slow enough to use and you can start getting decent ones around 58 or so if you're tired of maces.
