Amplify Magic and Dampen MagicFollow

So, I'm the read and go type. However, the read and go type doesn't always read everything she's supposed to. :)

Anyway, this can go in a guide or sink to the bottom, whenever/whatever, but I just wanted to point out something I learned tonite, because it's not in a guide (that I can find), and it's pretty important.

When I read the definitions of the spells, I just really read the first part. My interpretation of it was that Dampen Magic would protect from magic damage, and that's right, but it can also prevent healers from healing as well.

Amplify Magic, on the other hand, well, I didn't get it. Why would I want to strengthen magic spells against a friendly target? (yeah, duh, heal = magic, now I know). I didn't get Ice Block, either, when I first got the spell.

I'm going to bold the part I neglected to read in these descriptions:

Dampen Magic:
Quote:

Dampens magic used against the targeted party member, decreasing damage taken from spells by up to 10 and healing spells by up to 20. Lasts 10 minutes.

That can be not good. :)

Amplify Magic:

Quote:

Amplifies magic used against the targeted party member, increasing damage taken from spells by up to 30 and healing spells by up to 60. Lasts 10 minutes.

It's a good way to help the healers, and gods know I love helping the healers. :)

So anyway, just something I learned that helped at SP tonite, once it was explained to me. :)

Amp magic is used in raid fights where there is specifically mostly physical damage done (Gruul's lair is perfect for it) we also use it on Gurtogg Bloodboil.

I don't use dampen often except for BGs/Arenas/Soloing if I am going through a ton of caster mobs (but I kill them fast enough that I don't really care).

Yeah Dampen is really only good for arena teams without healers.

One other note about Dampen Magic that only occurred to me recently--I think it affects a Warlock's ability to heal via Drain Life. My 2s teammate is a Warlock, so I've stopped putting Dampen on him for Arena. Can anyone confirm or deny this effect? I need to duel him a few times and observe the diff in his healing with and w/o Dampen.

TFTD: Type "dampen" often enough in a short paragraph and it starts to look like a made-up word.

I've found both spells to be moderately useful and situational at best.

There are a few raids where you can use them, a few times soloing, and maybe some PVP, but I don't consider them major players in my spells book.

I don't think I've ever even cast Amplify Magic. I'm primarily a solo/BG player, but even in groups for instance runs, I've never seen a situation where Amplify Magic would be a "must have" spell. I use Dampen Magic all the time in BGs. It does seem to help a little bit by reducing incoming damage.

I use Dampen whenever I'm soloing, I use Amplify all the time in groups.
Once you play a healer, you'd be amazed how great Amplify Magic is. I demand it on the tank whenever there's a mage in my instance group, and I put it on tanks without consent when I play my mage. There are few group situations when you don't want Amplify Magic on--basically, if the person is taking four times as many damage spells as he is receiving heals, though it's not good to stick to that by the letter.
