More noob gear questions - this is getting complicated :)Follow

#1 Jul 19 2008 at 4:24 PM Rating: Good
Okay, so I'm lvl 62, about to hit 63 tonite, so I doubt that my gear matters a WHOLE lot in the grand scheme of things, since I'm going through it so fast (god, I do hope I get new pants, soon, these are so hootchie mama!). Anyway, I am running into conflicts a lot, because I'll have a piece I really like, then I'll get another piece which may be just as good or better, but I'm not sure. First, my armory (please don't yell at me for spending all those points on pvp gear, I really wanted it, so I got it, knowing full well I probably won't use it for too terribly long, and I'll be ready to get a lot when I hit 70, I promise! :)):

http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Frostmane&n=Trilliandent

I've been choosing gear with the advice I got from the other thread I made in mind (didn't want to rez it), and have gotten as much spell damage as possible. Is that the course I should continue to take to 70? I didn't have hit rating at all until I got those boots, though, and haven't run across any other gear that has it. I've noticed a lot of talk about hit cap in other threads, and I realize that those are threads about 70s, but I wonder if I should start really keeping an eye on that yet.

Anyway, I run into situations like this. A friend of mine bought me a bunch of stuff when I hit 60, because I "can't hang out in OL wearing THAT!" but her main is not a mage, so...I've returned most of it as I've gotten gear that is better than the stuff she got me, before I could even level into it. But here's a situation that's going to happen tonite. She gave me this: http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?witem=31192
Are the boost in those stats worth trading in my +20 spell damage for? I don't think so, but I don't know if I should work on getting more HP/MP or keep pushing for spell damage.

Another topic I'd like to read about is gems. I got these: http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?witem=24393

Looks like they are for healers, but I have no idea what kind of gems I'll be able to get for them, so I don't know if I should nuke them or work with them. As they are now, without gems, they are inferior to what I have, I think, but...and then there's the chance that I might pick something up that's even better, and soon, so I don't know if I should spend money on gems (not that I would know what kind to get, yet, and is that vendor in Thrall the only place to get them, besides the daily hfp quest? BTW, should I keep doing that daily quest to get more of the gems, even though I got the ring/gem I already got?)

Whew. :) Anyway, if anyone has links they can point me to to read about this stuff more, that'd be appreciated, and, as always, I value your opinions and input, and consider the mages here to be the smartest and best on the internets. :)

TIA,
Trill

P.S. If anyone would like to look at my specs, that'd be cool, too. I was thinking about putting the next 3 points into emp fb and ice shards, but maybe I should work on arcane a bit? Nothing there interests me until deeper in, though, like POM and imp blink. I know I'll probably go fire when I get to 70, because it seems like the Thing To Do, but I honestly hope that the expansion pack comes out before then, and somehow, magically enables me to remain frost. lol.

Just read that over and over again to answer all your questions. If your still lvling then don't care so much about gear.. hell, I'd drop 10 spell damage just to look cooler for a few lvls in outlands. You go though gear so fast it's not worth keeping up on it. You probably could have got a even better wrist piece in the time it took you to make this thread :)

BTW... I know what pants your wearing and what they look like just from the "hootchie mama" comment... and now you know what gear I down graded just to look better.

lol They ARE awful. However, I love the way most of the gear looks in the game, but if I have to wear hootchie mama pants for a little while longer, I'd rather do that than spend money on pants that have lower stats. Tonite is SP, though. I dunno what gear drops there, but if I were religious, I might be praying for pants. :)

EDIT: Actually, I'd rather spend time learning things about my class/stats than leveling by myself right now and getting new cuffs (besides, I'm broke after leveling enchant heh). I absolutely detest HFP by myself. So I'll wait till my guild runs SP tonite, and see what happens. :) After that, I may be able to talk one of them into running around and helping me quest a little. I may hit zangarmarsh after that, and get away from all that fire and lonely feelings that HFP has. blech! + rested xp ftw. :)

There's a pair of hideous looking pants(neon green) that you can get from a quest in Blood Furnace. I wore those from 61 til almost 70.

With purple stripes/swirlies? Yeah, those. BUT! I had a bad night. My guildies didn't show up for SP. However, they showed up later and we did ramps and bf, and, after an unsuccessful attempt of having our whole group ****** over by a couple of scammers (though we all fought well together, they had that part down), I ended up with a group of people I didn't know in SP. I told them I had never been in the instance, but next time? BIG FAT BOLD DISCLAIMER: YOU CAN NOT HELP BUT READ THIS: LOOK! I'M AN IDIOT W/ NEW CONTENT, SO IF YOU DON'T WANT TO PUT WITH THAT, LET ME KNOW, AND I'LL GO MY OWN WAY KPLZTHX!!

Because, seriously. Anyway. I got the pants. :) I'm no longer a minivan crack *****. :) **** em. :)

Errr, wait.

I just logged back to that screen and, well, hey, is this better than the ones before? Do we become whores when we hit level 60 or what?

My main could never dress like that. She's a conservative girl in a monogamous relationship(yes, I'm nerdy enough to write a backstory and no I don't feel like sharing). My warlock I'm leveling right now, however, just wouldn't care. Clothes are clothes to her.

My lock is a little snobby ***** who'd never wear anything like that. She and the pally she hangs out with are like Britney and Paris, only, they kick ***. :)

Gear - don't stress too much about this as you can levbel up with whatever (and what you have looks nice so far), I tended to keep a mix of stam and dmg so that I could still aoe grind when the opportunity arose (and as you head towards 70 there will be more aoe effects in instances so more stam helps your healers, though killing stuff faster does too I guess).

I always avoided healing gear, but then again I think the change to include +dmg was done after I levelled my mage. On the whole you'll get better stats from pure +dmg items, I wouldn't ignore a healing item if it was a definate upgrade to a peice, but I do think they should go to healers first.

You can buy green quality gems off the AH which will have nicer stats than the white vendor bought ones. Pure +dmg tends to be expensive (at least on my server), but you might find some +crit and dmg, dmg and stam or crit and stam for a reasonable price (as JC need to cut green gems to level up on). Don't worry about the socket bonus unless the bonus is really nice.

Spec - Get ice shards - it's great and I wouldn't worry too much about anything further in arcane until level 70 (I went up to clearcasting, but I'm not sure how much mana that actually saves).

Frost is fine for raiding, but the spellfire (or whatever the bop stuff fire mages make is called) is much better than frozen shadoweave (but doesn't look nearly as cool). If you want to maximise your damage potential then go for fire, if you find a raiding guild with a more relaxed view on specs then stay frost if that's what you'll enjoy, you should still be able to put out a competitive level of damage (and you'll have an easier time in pvp as frost too).

Thanks, Tv.

I know what you mean about healing gear, because someone asked me why I had "all thta healing gear," and I pointed out there was spell damage in there. So, yeah, if it's an upgrade, I'm takin it, unless a healer's in the party and needs it. I dunno about the gloves, tho. For whatever reason, I was allowed to need them (I guess the healer had something better, or, wait, did we have a healer for that run? lol)

Do you know where I can find more info about gems? I am assuming that an AH search for "gems" wouldn't help?

Thanks for the advice about specs. That makes me happy. And I am in a very laid back guild, so I think I could go w/ frost as long as I am determined to, but, at the same time, if I can benefit our raids by going fire, so be it. I've got a few levels to think that over.

Leveling tailor now, up to 283. I should have no probs making my gear by the time I'm 70. What I'm thinking is that it would be good to have both sets of gear, since fire is so desirable in pve, and frost so desirable in pvp.

Anyway, thanks again. I hope my server's up soon. I found about the joys of fishing + tailor, so I'm eager to train up in tailor, then fish again. :)

Up on the top bar here, there's a dropdown that says "Items", from there you can select Gems and choose by color. Worth looking at. For a basic tutorial, you might check out gems on Wowwiki.com as well if you have questions about socket bonuses and Meta Gems.

While frost is good for PvP, the frozen shadoweave set kinda isn't. I'd only craft it if you're considering using it for farming or PvE instances/raids(frost does just great in T4). Just something to consider.

So is frost gear a waste of time? There is, after all, pvp gear I can get w/ honor, etc points. (This is way beyond where I am, I know, just asking)

thanks,
Trill

For the most part you will want to be wearing frost pve gear in instances/raids/farming. PvP gear (from honor etc) in BGs/Arenas.
