Finally found the damn pet talent trees (first page of the EJ thread ftl)
I think points here are still unlimited, but as of now your pet will get 16 points. (or 21 if you're 51 BM)
So yeah, those 5 extra points make a difference.

Also, pet's can pick stuff from 1 tree depending on their family:

Cunning (Utility)
Bats
Dragonhawks
Nether Rays
Birds of Prey
Ravagers
Serpents
Spiders
Spore Bats
Wind Serpents

Ferocity(Dps)
Carrion Birds
Cats
Hyenas
Moths
Raptors
Tallstriders
Wolves

Tenacity(tanking)
Bears
Boars
Crabs
Crocolisks
Gorillas
Scorpids
Turtles
Warp Stalkers

This combined with Raptors and Windserpents being the only families to get a dps special makes me want to bet on Raptors being the new ravagers.
My first dps pet build
Ignore armor, cower, lionhearted and resistances. It's a home made talent builder and it automatically requires 5 points till next level, where it will be 3 for pets (so 16 points = 1 rank 5 talent)

I've been looking at the Tenacity tree and especially the talent "Roar of Fortitude." This seems like a very, very good talent. So much that maybe the raid might consider putting a Scorpid-using Hunter in the tank group. (Since Scorpids do the most DPS of all the "Tenacity" pets)

All in all, it looks like the pet game will be drastically different come Wrath. SV Hunters will no longer be relying on their focus-dumping Wind Sperpents. The only thing so far that bothers me is the lack of updating pet-specific skills (IE: Lightning Breath, Scorpid Poison, Furious Howl, etc). Of course, it's still early beta so this may (hopefully) be changed later.

Aww... Really? Each pet will only get to choose from ONE talent tree? I was really hoping that we'd be able to tame a pet and change the talent tree as we saw fit. Say if I wanted to solo grind, I would be able to spec my Wind Serpent into Utility, and if I was raiding I'd be able to switch it to DPS.

But my Windserpent will only be able to do utility? That's really lame. I was so thrilled when I found out that at endgame raiding Windserpents keep up with (and even sometimes beat) Ravagers in DPS. But if I'm going to have to switch to a cat or Raptor, I'll be really sad. I'm just not really interested in any of the pet families listed for DPS.

And moths? WTF?! I think when I first saw the blue moths on Bloodmyst Isle, I thought it would be cool to have one. But if it's not in a hunter's "image" to tame a ghost wolf, then moths are complete *********

Any pet not in the ferocity tree wont be a good pet for dps, period.
Purely because of spider's bite that gives +30% critdmg.
(and spiders aren in the ferocity tree Smiley: tongue)

With raptors having a special once a minute that does dmg and can increase AP temporarily I see them being the new ravagers.

Hmm i have some doupts that MM would be the pvp specc.Considering that all the classes would have better cc abilities(especially stun) and with death knights ,the drain mana games wont be so efficient at least in the beggining.

So a talent tree like this : http://www.mmo-champion.com/talent/?hunter=05203201525012240100531000000000000000000000000000000035205001055010000000000000

i believe it would be better.BM hunter with scater shot. Also with Master's call and Longevity and scater shot a BM hunter could survive better than MM hunter. And pvp is about survival!

Drain teams will still be worthwhile. All classes have stuns/roots/snares already, so it isn't going to change that much by having an extra class stepping in.

Do exotic pets mean dragons and such? I wouldn't think so because they are not beasts at all, they're Dragonkin. Which is close to or almost like Humanoid. Logic tells me that they are too independent and too smart to be tamed by a player.

They'll just be different beasts, I reckon. Probably different families, or possibly special versions of existing ones.

Oddly, a blue post stated that they wouldn't be a lot more powerful than normal ones, and that the real bonus would be the extra pet talent points. Pretty disappointing. Hopefully it will turn out better. Otherwise, what's the point?

Edit:

We're still working on implementing this particular talent. The talent will allow you to train a different "class" of pets which we're calling "exotic" right now. Only hunters with this talent will be able to train those pets. They won't necessarily be "stronger" (though will all have unique abilities that you can only get from exotic pets), the extra power you should get from the talent will be from the additional pet skill points (pet talent points).

Devilsaur anyone?

Actually, I never saw that devilsaur part before... How the hell would that work? :)

Yeah, if that's true I want the shark...

It would be cool to have it swimming in the air beside me. It comes with its own theme music as well...

The 5 extra skill points are the equivalent number of points a pet would get at level 100. So depending on how much impact the talents end up having, this could be very very significant. Does anyone know if the pet families base +% to damage/health/armor is gone?

Apparently...

As helpful as Mania has been with pets in the past, I wouldn't trust those numbers for even a second. Ferocity and Tenacity get +25 modifiers, but Cunning only gets +10? Blizzard is trying to balance pets and make them all viable. If those numbers were correct, not even the schweet 51-point BM talents would be worth having a cunning pet.

Wouldn't it be much more balanced if Cunning had +10% health/Armor and +5% damage?

I will have to go BM first, simply because I'd want an exotic pet. I'd be too curious not to try one out.

Actually there is a heck of a lot to try out. Different specs combined with individual pets' special abilities. I guarantee we are going to find a combo that is overpowered and then nerf bats will be swinging. Pets seem to now be their own entity, with various special abilities and talent trees all their own.

I'm not sure how they're going to balance it all, but I do know I'm going to have fun with it. :)

You don't already have 3 pets? :O

(On a completely different note, no helm looks decent on a female troll. So I'll be glad to change my hairstyle after wearing a mohawk for years.)

And it looks like cats are on their way out, eh?

I hope cats are not on their way out. I play defense usually in BG's by holding a tower or defending flag's, etc... and love just having prowl lvl 1 and shadow meld so an unsuspecting person comes in and BOOM CC'ed and slammed

You can tame dragons and sh*t and get their special abilities

As fun as it would be to travel with a faithful Onyxia by your side, you won't be able to tame dragons... they're not beasts. They're DRAGONKIN.

I think it's more probable you will be able to tame many untameable beast families, such as:

Basilisks, Chimeras, Kodos and Clefthoof, Thunder Lizards, Wyverns...

Imagine a Hunter with an immense Devilsaur pet... OMG RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!!!

I'd be willing to bet the 51-point BM talent never goes live (even on Beta) in its current form.

Why? Well, what happens if you respec with an exotic pet? Does it go away instantly? Can you use it as a different spec (thus defeating part of the point of going that deep into BM?) Can you just not feed your exotic pet now, and need to stable it in favor of something else or the loss of happiness will eventually make it run away... and that wouldn't work with that "on crit gain Loyalty" pet ability anyway.

I have a feeling a lot won't survive the Beta in its current form.

It might be that since loyalty will probably stay the same (ie: cap at some point and pretty much stay capped unless you PO the pet) that you'll be able to spec into a BM 51, train that exotic pet, level it up to your level and max loyalty then spec out of BM and keep the pet. There really isn't a significant pet penalty now for the owner respeccing. I think Blizz wants us to be able to swap specs around like candy so we keep a given toon 'fresh' for whatever we need.

So, you might be right, it might not surive, but it's also possible Blizz just won't care and you keep the pet and nothing happens. It acts like a normal pet at that moment.

Did everyone notice the announcement from WoW Europe? Looks like Mounts and Vanity pets won't take up bag space any more. I like the idea of trainable mounts!

If they want people to switch specs often (which is what many of us do and would want to do) .. it would be nice if players were able to pay a monthly ingame fee to an NPC to cover respecs.
