Frost mage vs Rogue, 1v1 stratFollow

#1 Jul 17 2008 at 9:40 AM Rating: Decent
I'm wondering what different people's strategies are for fighting well geared well played frost mages 1 on 1. I am ShS hemo and can't seem to deal with all of the snares, even blowing all my cd's.

One issue I have is dealing with my opener, assuming their spamming of arcane blast doesn't pull me out of stealth. One strat I've heard for locking them down is opening with cheap shot and immediately gouging to provoke a blink, leaving them stunned when they get to the other end. This seems to work, not sure if it's a latency thing or intended.

Either way I just don't seem to have enough mobility to keep up with them. Any advice/help is appreciated.

premed sap garrote shiv (crip2) expose armor

KS only after a blink
blind THE ELEMENTAL when you see it
COS the first thing that freezes you in place
TRINKET the second IF your shadowstep is up OR you got a CP and energy to DT the upcoming sheep

youll destroy 95% of frost mages without any cd's

the other 5%....

dont be afraid to vanish/hide if they summon the water elemental, though you shouldnt need it even a lil undergeared from them

it isnt a hard fight, just need to figure out a basic plan for em

...keep in mind thats for 1v1 though, dont blind the elemental instantly in arena 99 times out of 100

Id open up as PreMed>Garrote>Hemo>Kidney Shot>Shadowstep once they blink etc.

Or you can PreMed>Cheap Shot to provoke them into blinking and then kidney shot once you have the combo points, and dont forget that Cloak of Shadows :D

in my experience, fighting a mage, especially a frost mage, is a matter of good cooldown management. The elemental has a 2nd frost nova which roots you, so you need to make sure you can blind / gouge the elemental before breaking the first frost nova, or have ShS or something up the moment you get out of the snare effect.

personally when im fighting mages i dont open the fight with ShS, and i only use it if they are getting away. i tend to burn a lot of cooldowns fighting them and if i start spamming i'll run out of CDs to use and get massacred.
be patient and youll be able to take them easily most of the time.

Awesome, thanks for the replies. My strategy is usually pretty close to what you were suggesting Mongoose, though I never thought to blind the elemental, I usually saved that for the mage and vanished from the elemental. Maybe I was just really unlucky the few times I dueled this guy. CloS'ing and immediately being snared sucks.

It also doesn't help when one of your guildies is trying to show the mage where you are by following you around and announcing it in vent...

Me thinks it's time for a fair rematch.

Yeah that's stupid.

I play a mage and a rogue, it can be a very good fight from both sides. As a rogue be swift and relentless at staying in melee range. Always keep crippling poison up and know what cooldowns are available to you. It's just one of those fights where practice makes perfect, my mage used to suck against rogues, I dueled about 20-30 different rogues time after time, adding up to probably hundreds of duels. Now I love to fight rogues, practice makes perfect.

Even the best mages/rogues tend to go back and forth in duels. The rogue wins the first, the mage wins the second. The third is won by 100hp, which easily could have swung in either direction with a single RNG miss, resist or crit. The top mage/rogue team on my server...they duel eachother alot and duels go either way. Affix vs. Neilyo, I've seen a video where they split a series. It's a close fight, don't let rogues tell you "it's easy" or "we dominate mages". Yeah, maybe bad mages. Against good frost mages, it will always be a close fight. It's possible to dominate them in one fight, then blow all your cooldowns and lose the next fight.

Just practice, practice, practice.

Neilyo 8 has a good section at the beginning where he shows how he'd fight as frost mage as mut.

ShS actually makes it a lot easier to fight frost mages, but the main part of that video is LOSing the pet and the mage while the pet is up. I do that all the time in rated arena.
