Second Opinion Wanted (Weapon Comparison)Follow

I've recently spec'd to a 2H MS build at level 61 and I'm amazed at how much faster I can kill than my old 2H Fury Improved Slam spec. But that's not my point.

I've been using Partisan Polearm of the Beast to great effect, but last night I completed a quest and received the Helboar Carving Blade. My weapon skills are similar (296 polearm, 287 2H sword). I have maxed-out both Poleaxe Specialization and Sword Specialization.

I geared up the sword and gave it a go. While the weapons seem similar, I find the sword isn't nearly as effective as the polearm. The extra swing proc hardly ever goes off and it seemed as though I was getting a crit on the polearm every fourth swing or so.

I'm going to dump the sword and go back to the polearm, but I wanted to hear what the warrior community here had to say. Any thoughts on why such an apparently similar weapon performs so poorly in comparison? Should I give it more than a couple dozen mob kills before rendering my judgement?

Ok, firstly, I'm assuming you maxed out Poleaxe AND sword so that you could try both out initially and decide which way you wanted to go, avoiding the constant trip back to the trainer for respecs. If this is not the case, reconsider ... you cannot equip both weapons at the same time (yet, anyway), and you're wasting 5 points by taking both.

With that assumption in the bag, I would suggest (based purely on those 2 weapons) to stick with the sword. It has a slightly better damage range, which would mean that you would do better MS damage, but only by a miniscule amount - not really enough to make that big a difference.

However, that being said, Sword vs Axe/Poleatm has been debated / discussed / dissected / argued about / etc etc since time began (even before), and you'll still get the same result, and that is that there is no better spec (at least for leveling). If you PvP at 70, then the choice is blindingly clear ... swords, as 5% crit is worthless with Resilience negating it to a large extent.

I actually once saw (on ElitistJerks) a calculation for damage done between the 2 specs with the same damage and statted sword vs axe, and the difference is a fraction of a percent (in favour of swords, btw). Not nearly enough to say one is better than the other.

So, I would say - stick with what gives you more of a tickle in the crotch ;-) ... if more crits make you happy, go for it, if extra attacks make you happy ... go for that (bear in mind the extra attacks can also crit, giving you the potential for Quadriple Damage on one swing.)

One thing you don't mention though, is your race (or even your faction). If you're Human ... swords .. no question. If you're Orc, Axes ... no question. Each of these races have expertise in the associated weapon, and will always do more damage over time with those weapons. If you're any other race ... it makes no diffs.

Hmmm...I honestly hadn't thought of that at the time I spec'd, which seems kind of foolish now. I maxed both because my tanking weapon is the Footman's Longsword. I figured the extra swing proc might help generate some burst aggro.

And Mkay is a human warrior. OK, I'll give the sword more time to see if it grows on me before I make a decision. Thanks for the reply.
