Late 40s SpecFollow

Hello All,
Up until now (48), I've been a retadin as I've always been told it's the preferable way to level. Now, I'd like to make a switch to a AoE/tanking prot spec. I know I can't get Holy Shield until 50, though. Is there any use in making the switch now? I intend to tank in Outlands, once that point comes, but I'll be doing mostly solo stuff until that point. I don't need "use this talent" advice, I'm simply looking for viability of a tankadin at the upper 40s/lower 50s.. Thanks in advance.

Holy Shield comes at 40, actually. It's Avenger's Shield that isn't gotten until 50, and it's not at all necessary to be successful as protadin solo. My paladin has been prot since 40 and I love it - being able to take 3-5 melee mobs my level with ease. Once or twice I've grabbed ~6 mobs a few levels below me, put up Consecrate, Holy Shield and Seal of Light, and tabbed out to read some things online. When I came back they were all half dead or more and Seal of Light had about 7 seconds left.
