First off, make sure you read the stickies in forums before you start posting questions. Alot of basic information about rogues has been covered their. Secondly, the rogue forums has a Pitbull named Theophany. You will meet him shortly. He will be the one calling you a moron and telling you to read his Rogue Compendium http://http://wow.allakhazam.com/journal.html?user=359343. He has spent countless hours pooring information onto this and other forums for people to read and get answers from. Now, currently the best pvp(meaning almost all rogues use it) is a ShS build. Whether it is 17/0/44 like Theo's current build or its 20/0/41 like alot of rogues. Good luck with the Pitbull.

Edit: I suck at links.

BG activity? That sounds like you're into basic gankage. For that purpose I suggest Assassination or Subtlety; have fun killing 20% hp mages.

No offense, but you basically just said "pick one of the only viable PvP specs".

For BGs, I personally like Mutilate just because it's more fun for me to burst down a caster quickly. It also makes me feel like less of an idiot for buying S1/S2 daggers (but only marginally less of an idiot). I won't deny that Shadowstep's mobility is a fantastic thing sometimes, though. Particularly in EotS - line of sight is messed up in ways that you can ShS from the hill by an enemy base straight up to someone defending it. I drove one warlock crazy this way, just stepping in to sap, waiting for diminishing returns, and repeating the maneuver until help arrived. Even with his felhunter out and a warrior helping him look, the mobility and stealth power of Shadowstep were just too much to resist. (He may also have been stupid, there's distinct possibilities here.)
