A decent build for PvP and leveling is a deep frost build. You will start losing traction vs. fire mages in instances and such, but you'll have a lot of survivability (which helps both PvP and leveling). The sticky at the top has some good frost builds in it. I would recommend full frost until you hit 60, then branch out into arcane if you like, but that's all up to you and your playstyle. Also, respec a couple of times. As a mage (even a frost one), you should have some familiarity with the other specs. For example, you should know what Arcane Mind does and Presence of Mind, as well as Combustion. So, don't be afraid to respec from time to time.

For the race, Undead and gnomes have racials that are more geared towards PvP... but in the end, I wouldn't kill myself because I didn't roll an undead. I never could stand to look at their elbows sticking out of the cloth (evidently they are terrible tailors). You really ought to pick a character that you are going to be okay with staring at for hours on end.

Have fun! Good luck!

When you pick a race, really just go for what looks good to you, most important thing. I picked a gnome for Escape Artist and Expansive Mind, and I still catch myself wishing I had just rolled a Dranei cause they look so much cooler. Or wishing i had gone horde so i can grab a troll, generally considered the worst racial bonuses in the game, but i just think they look awesome.

Edit: If your friends are playing (which you mentioned), make sure your on the same side as them (ally vs horde) probably the most important thing to take into consideration when choosing a race.

As for spec, Frost is basically the PVP spec for mages (although fire and arcane are viable) so give Frost 1 point there. In soloing Frost is also an awesome spec: you can take more damage, better control of mobs, "oh snap!" buttons galore, (once again fire and acracne are viable, still frost is better) so give one point for Soloing to frost. The only place you will lose out is instances, fire will pretty much take that hands down (give fire 1 point) however I did many instances as frost and no one complained in the instance that my dps was low, because we still hit hard even with frost spec.

So i would say go frost (2 points) over going fire (1 point) or arcane (zero).

Besides in revamped leveling of Pre-Outlands you will be soloing alot more than going into instances, so try out frost. Worst comes to worst, you respec.

Generally, for PvP, frost is best. For PvE, fire. Until you get into real hardcore raiding a mix spec could probably do; you will not completly melt faces or be on top of the DPS list in dungeons, but you'll do fair enough at both. Read trough this thread that I made some time ago.

Thanks everyone for the info. since (based on a poll)trolls are best for pve and undead r best for pvp AND fire is for pve and frost is pvp. maybe i should be undead and fire or troll and frost because then its like a hybrid which is what i want. troll with frost is what im gonna be i guess. im should look for a frost/arcne pvp talent build right? plz let me know. and also can anyone give me tips 4 a mage, like lving, really basic stuff becuz... im not CURRENTLY playing WoW... i got WoW and TBC along with it and... my comp too slow but my dad was already going to replace on of our comps(we have 2 for our family =3) and its gonna have kick *** performance,(MAC BOOK PRO) like 6gig ram, 250gig memory, 2.9GHZ and so much more. so im gonna start playing in about 2 weeks... CANT WAIT!!!!!

Dude... I think you missed a *lot* of the point.

1) Undead is not the best for PvP. They have a racial ability that is nice in PvP, but if all your friends play Alliance characters, it matters not a bit. Also, gnome's escape artist is pretty nice for PvP.
2) Trolls are not best for PvE. In fact, I'd say humans are better for the advantage of faster Rep grinding/looks of equipment (heck, for all that, I'd say that female human/blood elf/night elf have the best models for looking at, but I could never bring myself to play a chick toon, being a guy IRL). Again, if your buddies play Alliance, pick an alliance toon you can enjoy.
3) I hate both the undead look and the gnome emotes, so I play a human mage and a troll mage, but I enjoy PvP quite a bit. The ultimate decider of "what race should I pick" is, "What do i like looking at?" It may take a while to figure out which one you like, etc.
4) Fire is not "better" than Frost anymore than Arcane is "better" than Fire. They are all different and have their places. Frost affords you more utility and fire affords you more dps (generally speaking), but at low end 70, arcane/fire is a better spec for raiding than deep fire (as you don't have the gear for it). Don't confuse leveling builds with raiding builds with PvP builds.

Lastly: Remember, it is a game! Have fun! Make friends, and don't be insulting to others.

It used to be that you would grind things (AOE grinding), but now it is more efficient to level via questing. Do all the quests in your starting area. A mod that could help is QuestHelper. I have found it invaluable. Also, if you want a leveling guide that is free, James makes a nice one.

I hope it was helpful, so you won't have to say, "I think". ;-)

If your friends are all going to be Blood Elfs, then that makes sense for you, unless you want to go undead (they can get to the Blood Elf starting area very easily). That's going to be your personal choice, but if you choose undead, you'll be the ugly duckling of the group (if that matters to ya).

Oh yes. Questhelper is an amazing leveling tool, though an enormous resource hog if you're in a zone for which you have lots of quests. NBD if you end up with the system you described.
