Okay so i just ding'd earlier today on my Mage alt, thinkin of making it my new main, and I am wondering which item would be most beneficial for a fire mage the Glacial Spike, Arcane Crystal Pendant or the Fire Ruby

Glacial Spike sux - even if your frost.

Since you are Fire spec, Fire Ruby would be awesome...for one spell every 3 minutes. Mana return and lot more spell damage...nice for one big hit. Then, useless for 3 minutes.

However, the necklace will give you increased benefit for all your spells. That would get my vote.

Why does the Glacial Spike suck? I'm using rank 1 frost bolt for 22 mana... Glacial Spike proc + that = free mana.

So a "chance" free Rank 1 Frostbolt (i.e. 6%) is better than +16 Spell Damage for all your spells 100% of the time? hmmmmm.....

I guess the Glacial Spike doesn't suck, it is just not nearly as useful as the other quest rewards. So I meant "relatively sux". :)

"Free"? I thought the spike had a 6% chance on giving 160 mana on each frost spell. Meaning if I'd cast a 22 mana frostbolt and it'd procced, I'd get 160 mana thus earning 160-22=138 mana.

But alright, point taken... It's fairly situational and the proc chance is too low.

FWIW - I've always taken the fire ruby, 3 times now. Its a nice bump in a fight and is a good teacher in cool down planning and use. Otherwise I'd take the necklace and I've always "reweighed" the choice between those two each time.

If you need to learn CD timing, then I can see your point. However, if you don't, then the necklace is far superior as far as damage output goes (of course, this depends on what you currently have for a necklace too).

Excellent point! Now that you mention it, I remember that each time I had a necklace that was a better fit with my overall gear (don't remember which one). That was the other factor that caused me to take the Ruby.

Well I had just recently completed this quest this weekend, and picked the fire ruby. I can't say how many times this has saved me. I would run oom, and the mob still has quite a bit of health that I wouldn't be able to wand down before I die, so I pop the ruby, gain some mana and do one final burn on them to kill them.

I love it! =)

This happens to you a lot? Honestly, I barely ever ran out of mana while leveling, and almost never lost any health. But I did level frost, so it is easy mode for leveling. Well, it goes to show that different items have different benefits due to different playstyles. :)

Usually only happens when I go all killing crazy, and forget to drink after the second mob, and pull another one which in turn pulls two others lol.

EDIT: So I don't sound like I think I'm all high and mighty... I usually run away after I take down one mob... I might get lucky taking down the second one (with the multiple pull/low mana thing like I mentioned above). But as I said below, mages are quite powerful. To take down a group of three, I usually powerup a pyro, when that goes, I, then, automatically switch to another target and sheep, and then fireball the one I pyro'd, down. Which leaves one to deal with while the other is still sheeped. Very cool.

Seriously, the damage my mage does is crazy, and it's sad to say that at my level I do more damage than a lot of my guildies that are running raids.

But you're right. Everyone has different playstyles and different situations. I, for one, get power hungry when I 2-shot mobs the same or slightly higher level than me (which is probably why I forget to drink) lol
