I'm running in a decent Hellfire Ramparts PUG and Garotte String Necklace drops. The paladin (retribution) and druid (balance) both roll greed. The other two pass.

My current neck piece is Sunstone Necklace of Stamina (with +33 stamina). I think about it and decide it is a lateral upgrade, something I can use questing (I'm a 2H Imp Slam Fury/Arms hybrid spec) but not tanking where the 33 stamina would better serve me. So I greed roll. The Druid won the item and I say gratz and we move on.

Was my assessment of the item's relative value to me correct, or should I have need rolled? I don't automatically assume a blue item is better than a green item, and it would have only been a set piece and not an all-the-time piece, so I thought it fair to give the others a fair shot at it. Doesn't speak well of my inner pirate (arrr!) but I do try to be adult about looting.

From a total stats perspective Garotte String Necklace is marginally better I would say.

33 Stam vs 16 Stam and (~=)18 Str with some crit.

I wouldn't have bothered needing on that. Especially since an amazing Warrior-only piece might have fallen next. Save up your needs for real upgrades. It helps you get invited back ;)

If the druid rolled greed, and was specced balance. Don't worry about rolling greed on items that a melee class could use. Unless of course it is a direct upgrade, or something that is specific to a class, greed is generally ok to roll. Need on items that are class specific and/or direct upgrades (2nd set for tanking).

If no-one wants it, and you have an enchanter who can DE it. Rolling on shards is my preferred method when it's a marginal or crap item.

As a warrior, you should roll on tanking gear. And you should roll on melee DPS gear. But generally only need on things that you are specced for, or have told the group before hand you are needing on.

I would've needed that for DPS gear, defo. If everyone greeds or passes it doesn't matter if a warrior-only item comes next, you're still as entitled to roll on that. While the needy group members aren't very attractive, I can't believe anyone in their right mind would hate you for making two legitimate need rolls in the same instance.
