Leveling a PriestFollow

#1 Jul 10 2008 at 4:06 PM Rating: Decent
How quickly does the average priest level and what are some good races, on either side. Ive wanted to be a spellcaster class and have a level 11 warlock, Ive been thinking about a mage but fizzled out on the idea when i got schooled, so I was wondering about a priest.

I am not sure what discouraged you from being a mage or warlock . They level much faster that a priest for sure. I can understand that locks at end game are not needed as much as priests and mages, but still a very powerful class espcially in pvp.

Your leveling will depend on how you build your priest. A shadow priest will do well in solo, but will not be desired often in dungeons around lvl 40 and up, which can slow his progress at times. A holy or desc priest will lvl slowly at first, but as they lvl up, there are more needs for them and so their lvling rate improves a bit.

All priest races are good for something, but that depends you wanna be dps or mainly a healer and if u wanna pvp or just pve.

Finally, i suggest looking into druids. They are a very capable class that can heal, cast, melee and sneak. And they survive well if u know what u doing and lvl fast and there are always room for them in a party.

What do you want to do? PVP? PVE? Raid? Group? etc...

I can level a priest just as fast as a mage.

My priest leveled WAY faster than my mage, and made it farther (I gave up the mage at level 51). It's really a matter of playstyle and personal preference (and in this case, whether you can kite Smiley: wink). How fast you level really depends on too many things, including (and I'd say mostly) whether you like the class. There really is no "average."

Mages and pallies are what i consider to be capable of lvling faster if they specialize right. And by that i mean Frost Mage specialized AOE and prot Pally.
These builds worked well for me from around lvl 35 till lvl 58 now and i think i will continue using it till lvl 70 or till i fail to survive when i solo using it.
And yet what i meant in my first post was regardinbg lvling prior to lvl 35. But maybe that's because i was not a shadow priest or because none of my upper lvl chars boosted my priest with gear or cash.**SHRUG**

I'm currently a lvl 25 SPriest, and I got there very quickly. Granted, I'm instancing right now, gearing up for later levels so I could be at level 30ish, but w/e. Many people have their own theories on how to spec while leveling. The FAQ's here have many leveling specs, but no guides to where to put your talents. While leveling, I placed my first 5 points into Wand Spec, then Spirit Tap. If I were to do it again, I'd switch the order. Spirit tap is IMMENSELY helpful when leveling. It multiplies your Spirit by 100%, and adds a 50% regen to your mana WHILE casting. Basically, the more spirit you have from gear + 5/5 Sprit Tap = no downtime to drink water. Helps you level WAAAY faster.

Also, leveling involves optimizing your DPS. What I do for my rotation is: Shield --> Mind Blast --> Shadow Word: Pain --> Wand until Mind Blast comes back from cooldown --> Mind Blast --> Wand... yada yada yada. Keep SW:P up, make sure Mind Blast is ALWAYS on cooldown (CD) (meaning you use it whenever it's available). Right now, I typically get about 35ish DPS, which isn't that bad at my level, I'm guessing. I'm waiting until I get Mind Flay so I can see how that'll go into my rotation.

Why don't you have Mind Flay at level 25? Some people say it sucks until around level 36, but I found it very usefull from the start.

Anyway, back to the OP: I'm rolling a priest at the moment. Leveling goes pretty fast if you have the right spec and rotations. You should be able to kill mobs of your own level without downtime.

And it's fun to switch between DPS'ing and healing. Even as shadow priest, you'll be able to heal instances. I healed in ZF at level 40; I'm not an expert yet, but I guess I can heal as shadow priest until I reach outland.

Also I noticed you're "wanted" as a priest. Quite often I'm getting whispers, asking to join a group or a guild... That never happens on my rogue. :)

Mind flay is useful but no must until you get shadow form. Try and open with holy fire; it's definitely not the best damage spell, but me levelling as a disc/holy priest it's the spell I use most... In disc/holy you need to find a rotation where you keep the holy fire DOT up and mind blast whenever possible... In shadow you'll want to avoid using holy spells; even so, in the lower levels a holy fire might be handy to close up your cycle.

Mindflay a.s.a.p.

Mindflay replaces your pwshield, which is a huge mana drain. It means less downtime. Don't underestimate it. It's not there for the damage.

I didn't get Mindflay until now because I put my first 5 talents into Wand Spec.

And what would be a good rotation to use?

For solo play, Mind Blast, VE (use Renew until you get VE), SW:P, Mind Flay x2. If you started at max range and backed up while casting your instants, you can fit in both Mind Flays. By then the mob is on you and, assuming he's only got ~30% left, you wand him to death. Throw in another Mind Blast if needed/desired. Shield only if you have to - you'll find that with VE/Renew you really don't need it much.

For multiple mobs, DOT them all, make use of Shield/Scream as needed.
