Resto Gems... Sprirt or mana per 5???Follow

Ok. Pretty simple question... Do I socket blue slots (when the socet bonus is worth it)with 9 heals+2mana per/5 or 9 heals+4spirit????

Healing/Spirit Gems.

Spirit to Mp5 Conversion Chart, including Int

At 150 Int, 2 Spirit = 1 mp5. Therefore, Spirit is more regen than Mp5 even when constantly casting. This includes PvP.

Edit: Oops Misinterpreted the chart, thought that was in combat. DukyFrudo is right.

MP5 = 5 * (0.001 + sqrt(Int) * Spirit * Base_Regen) rounded up
Base Regen at 70 is 0.009327.
Intensity with "X" Int gives the following in combat Mp5 Values for 2 Spirit
 
300 Int: 0.538525686 Mp5   15.4% time out of combat to equal 1Mp5 or 46 seconds not casting in a 5 minute fight.  
400 Int: 0.62183109  Mp5   12.6%  38 seconds  
500 Int: 0.695224624 Mp5   10.2%  30  
600 Int: 0.761577451 Mp5   7.9%   24  
700 Int: 0.822595173 Mp5   5.9%   18  
  
With Living Spirit and BoKings you get 1.265 Spirit per 1 Spirit.  So 2 Spirit = 2.53 Spirit in a  
raid setting.  With those raid buffs/talents you get these Mp5 Values.  
  
300 Int: 0.681234993 Mp5  10.6%   32  
400 Int: 0.786616329 Mp5  7.1%    21  
500 Int: 0.87945915  Mp5  4%      12  
600 Int: 0.963395476 Mp5  1.2%    4  
700 Int: 1.040582893 Mp5  Spirit is always better.

This is excluding Tree Aura and Divine Spirit which both increase the importance of spirit, but most raids have a priest with the Spirit Buff. I would always use Spirit over Mp5, and if you get your hands on 11 Healing/5 Spirit Gems it becomes a moot point.

Correction: With a resto build (or any build including Intesity but not Dreamstate), and ignoring an Equip effects...
At 150 Int, 2 Spirit = 1 mp5 out of the 5 sec rule.
At 150 Int, 2 Spirit = 0.3 mp5 in the 5 sec rule.

Since your gems offer either 4 spirit or 2 mp5, you would need 2 Spirit = 1.66 mp5 out of the 5SR, or 2 Spirit = 0.5 mp5 in the 5SR, which is not on the chart because it requires over 600 int.

None of this considers BoK, Innervate, Tree of Life Aura, Darkmoon Card: Blue Dragon, or Bangle of Endless Blessings...
Considering all these and a progression raid setting (one in which you will have access to mana pots, mp5 weapon coating, either an mp5 flask or +healing & mp5 elixirs, and the possibility of a spriest, mp5 totem, and Judgement of Wisdom), druids have VERY few mana problems. The general consensus is to gem for pure +healing, unless the socket offers a significant amount of +healing and only ONE of the sockets is not red... in which case you use the +healing/spirit gems.

You seem to understand how to weight the socket bonuses though, and the rest of this post is just explanation, but if you want the short answer: SPIRIT



edit: you can also gem pure +healing and get one of the spirit staves (putting pure spirit gems and the spirit enchant on it) and equip it just for innervate or when your mana isnt regening fast enough.

Raid Buffed + spirit stick, I'm already at the point where innervate returns more mana than my mana pool. So I've been gemming mp5, as when innervate is out of the picture, 2mp5 > 4 spirit for spam healing. The only time I'd take spirit over that is if I'm the MT spirit aura *****, or if there is significant time outside of 5sr, which there isn't in many tbc bossfights.

Just a random comment about using mp5 elixirs/flasks: don't.

Elixir of Draenic Wisdom provides almost identical benefits to the Elixir of Major Mageblood at most gear levels, except it gives it mostly by spirit, which means any time out of the 5SR or under Innervate/bangles/whatever, Draenic Wisdom is better. It also gives a tiny boost in healing with IDS.

What's more, it leaves open another elixir slot for either Healing Power (an extra 55 healing), or Elixir of Mastery (for more stat boosts). Draenic Wisdom + Mastery gives more regen than a flask, which providing even more regen outside of the 5SR and similar, AND gives you a bit of a stam boost as well.
