I’m on a very lame server. I don’t want to pay to move, but I just can’t group or raid. I’m currently trying to get into 5-man heroics, but usually I get a response, “Ehh, your gear is a bit low” or “Hmm, you’re a bit low for this one.”

It’s sort-of a downward spiral. I can’t get into groups because my gear sucks, my gear sucks cause I can’t get into a group…

There are so few people on the server – add to that issue, the fact that alliance is out-numbered about 5:1…

I’m looking for help on ways to gear up that don’t require me to get into a 5-man. I’ve even been rejected from non-heroics like MGT and the Tempest Keep set of instances. Are there any quests I could run? I’m currently working on my tailoring to get my Spellfire. I have a handful of cloths so far… (15) I’m spec’d for farming – so assume I’m going to respec to run heroics…. I’m not trying to enter a group as a 0/0/61 :)

Any advice would help.

As usual - I can't seem to load the armory. Borsuk, Vashj

Quests?
Crafting?
PVP Rewards? (Not arena)
Anything would help???

Give a link to your current armory and it'll help show what you really need to upgrade first and where you can.

Other than that I'd say grind out the honor for the s2 staff and a few peices depending on what your current gear is like till you get your spellfire set. S2 should be sufficient for most heroics and if you find a guild that will take you, try finding a guild that runs alot of heroics (they end up working out better than pugs anyway)

You can always make the Frozen Shadoweave and SpellStrike sets (via Tailoring). That will crank up your DPS significantly.

About some of the pieces:

Head: Best Damage and Crit I could find. Dumped a Blue 70 piece. Going to this 68 added a few Damage and Crit.

Shoulder: Yeah, it’s PVP, but it’s the best I can find.

Legs: Yeah – it’s Lock Gear, but again, best available.

Witching band – this needs to go. Can’t find anything…

There is a couple things you can do, and I'm gonna gear this towards getting into 5-man heroics. First of all I would suggest going into a deeper arcane spec at least 40 points for Mind Mastery. It will beef up your frost/fire spell damage until the point your empowered frostbolt or fireball starts performing better. Also, when your asked for your spell damage before they invite you the group you can say 675 instead of 537 which is a considerable difference in the eyes of a group leader.

Secondly, don't gem anymore for int or for sta and do all spell damage or spell damage/crit (depending on gem slot color for bonus). You can make up for sta/int by upgrading gear with stats (you have many items that don't carry any raw stats). Also you have no enchants; they make a huge difference. I can understand not wanting to dump gold into items you want to get rid of but you not going to replace everything over night. Figure out what slots you will upgrade first and enchant the a couple. To put it in perspective just from enchants you are down 100 spell dmg and 270 hp.

Thirdly, where to start getting gear? Well, first of all you should be doing the SSO dailies to begin with. Not only for the gold, but if you do them all you can get 4k+ rep a day. Reverered with them gets you a sword that with a moderate off hand is better than your staff. And exalted will get you an epic necklace. When in the queue for heroics always have H-SP chosen. It is the easiest one, is usually quick (for faster 3 badges), gains you rep for a nice ring (CE exalted), and you might get a Quag's Eye which you will use for a very long time. Also, in downtime do BGs. You can get enough honor from losing battle grounds for half a week (causal play) to get one item, and the Merciless gear is much better than anything you have so far. And if you get in winning groups it is that much faster.

Thanks -

Yeah Mark - I'm in the process of making the Fire set.

As to the switch to arcane - you know that's a good idea. I didn't think to go deep for the damage boost, then stack on some fire. I think I was going for the standard fire raid builds too early.

What would the spell rotation on something like that be?

don't forget to be hit capped before stacking damage/crit.

As for the spell rotation, assuming you are still taking stick with the scorch x5 fireball x7 scorch x1 for restack. Use a pom-pyro or pom-fireball when you have the chance. And assuming you won't run oom throw arcane power up when you can as well.

is a possible build. You have a few options, take a pt from fire to max out mind mastery. Giving you 21 pts in fire. You could either put points into burning soul, master of elements, or critical mass. All are very helpful in their own way.

If the original poster was just doing heroics would he really need to be hit cap? If so, wouldn't it / shouldn't it be only capped to a 62 elite, which most bosses in heroics seem to be? If wowwiki is correct, then he is actually hit capped already for a level 62 mob. http://www.wowwiki.com/Spell_hit_rating

I only say this because most people in heroics will only care about one thing, damage. If you are going to try to be hit capped vs a 63 that you will never get, that will really hamstring your bonus damage that you can get, which won't get you into any more heroics. I have had to fight this same issue with my mage, and he is better geared then the original poster. Being hit capped is good and everything, but the bonus damage is the only thing that people will look at.

Yes - I think Anobix was getting more toward Kara geared. I don't know if it is possible to hit cap to that extent prior to running a few heroics. I'm mostly gearing for them - so my hit cap, while important, isn't my biggest concern. I think it's ok - being 67 atm. That is without the other part of my Spellfire set (Gems) and without any enchants. Add to that the fact that I'm 61 frost for farming purposes... I think I'll get it into the 90s soon.

Indeed the change to arcane will do you good. In terms of gear the most important change would be getting sword from Murmur in normal SL and enchant it, and pair it with a nice off hand. That gear change and the respec to arcane should get you close to 700 bonus damage if I am not mistaken. Some oil and elixirs and you will be good to go for all normal instances and a good deal of heroics.

I'd look for normal Arcatraz runs a) to get your rep with Sha'tar up and b) for Shiffar's Nexus Horn (very nice trinket). Also keep handing in Aldor marks as they will give you rep with Sha'tar until just before honoured (with Sha'tar) and if you are going for the SSO neck then you'll want Aldor exalted for the proc.

Second thing would be enchants, I wouldn't put anyhting too expensive on your current gear, but I would expect at least the int on bracers, crit on gloves and mystic spellthread on legs.

Third is pvp with several things you could shoot for:
1. S2 staff
2. Bracers (tend to be a pain to upgrade at that level)
3. Neck (I'd go for Guardian's Pendant of Subjugation because it will last you a long time).
4. Find a friend who is happy to lose 10 arenas a week with you (or win if you're lucky), I would have said S4 gloves, but I think with the set bonus the spellfire will be better. S3 items with no rating requirement are: Off-hand, helm/legs (though spellstrike would be better), robe and wand. None of it is that super for pve, but I would collect some points if you can while working on other upgrades, then you can spend your arena points to fill in any gaps. Edit: choose plain spell damage options, not the spell penetration ones as that is useless for pve.
5. I have no idea how the S2 stuff compares to other options, but everyone loves epics right?
