Im not sure how it works, but if I use Rank 1 Frost Nova on a lvl 60 mob does it still freeze without resisting or anything?

That's a question I've had on my mind for a bit too... Check out my "odd(?) elementalist spec" thread... If rank 1 frost spells have a higher chance to be resisted my strategy is completly gimped...

there is 0 difference between r1 and r6 or whatever frost nova or any other spell.

So technically you could play a firemage in PvP and use rank 1 frostbolts to keep enemies slowed?

People commonly do this, in fact. Not sure why you'd want to downrank Frost Nova, since instant is instant either way, because mana really shouldn't be much of an issue. (Maybe it is in arena? I haven't done that yet.)

I'm not too sure about that yet... I've always thought that 0 points in arcane means you're going to be out of mana 95% of the time. If it isn't a problem I suppose I could just stick to normal level frost nova's and the like.

To continue on the subject; I suppose the crit chance of any given spell equal the crit chance displayed on your character panel?

Might not be the right forum to ask, but; for a rogue, do abilities have a base crit chance or does their unbuffed/untalented crit chance always equal your melee crit chance?

Melee crit unless you have a talent buffing it.

ETA: But the special attack hit rating does not suffer the normal penalty of dual wielding. So it's always 5% chance to miss a special, adjusted by +hit and level differences.

you downrank because the damage for the highest rank is negligable but both do what they are there for: the root. Why waste 300 mana (or whatever) to get an extra 200dmg when that could be used for an icelance crit on a frozen target?

Oh, and it depends on the abilities. Spells (and talents to do with those spells) may have different crit chances, such as the various frostbolt (empowered frostbolt) and scorch/fireblast crit talents in their respective trees.

Alright, so it may differ for crit chance, but not for resist effects or anything else that cancels out the entire spell?

Since I don't really want my rank 1 frostbolt to crit, I wouldn't really mind =P

Rank 1 frost nova is preferred (pvp and pve), as is rank 1 frost armor (reappling in BGs/arena after dispells), and rank 1 poly (pvp only).

Now that is something I don't understand. In the arenas I can understand perfectly well that you'll want to conserve mana and thus reapply rank 1 frost armor simply for the slowing debuff. In the BG's this only works when you're in the middle of a fight, but aside from that; I use every moment of rest to (if needed) reapply my maximum rank frost armor and drink... I barely have any mana problems in BG's.

Correct, that is what was implied.

If you put armor up and it gets purged (for example), then keep applying the rank 1, the shammy'll go OOM waaay before you will. It's a nice mana drain technique. That's about the only time I reapply it in combat.

As of yesterday's patch, Ice/Motlen/Mage Armor are no longer magical effects and cannot be dispelled. And a woohoo! to that. No more GCDs wasted reapplying R1 Ice Armor. Granted, that also means no more GCDs wasted by that pesky priest/shammy dispelling, but w/e, I'll take it.
