SD vs CritFollow

Oh wizened mages I need your halp. As my little gnome gets closer to 70 and continues to get gear upgrades I find myself with what I feel is too much crit, and too little spell damage.

I'm not sure if I'm completely off the mark, but every time I see the chance to drop, say 5 SD for .2% to crit I can't help but take it and I think it may have actually hurt me at this point do to smaller normal and crit spells.

Basically, I'm wondering if there is some magic, or even rough, ratio of +dmg:crit%

If it helps, at this point, completely unbuffed, in mostly quested/bought greens and some quested blues I'm sitting at 326 +damage and and 23.48% to crit, and my spec is 37/21/0 (working towards 40/21 with only 2 points in Mind Mastery so far).

I realize while leveling it isn't a huge deal one way or the other, but I was wondering about it earlier and it got me curious for when I hit 70 more than anything.

Thanks for any advice.

For a level 70 Raiding Mage, you are looking generally for this gear set up
1. Spell hit untill capped
2. Spell Damage
3. Spell Haste
4. Spell Crit

There are always some twists, for a raiding fire mage, having close to 30%crit is needed and can take priority in large amounts over spell damage. Once you hit 1000-1100 Spell Damage, Haste now will give more dps than spell damage. Spec's can also make some differences. Stick to what i said up top and you'll be in good shape.

Leveling as you mentioned is an entirely different ball park. One i've mostly long since forgotten and i'll leave it to another poster to help with that.

Well, yeah for leveling it makes little to no difference. Things are dead in between 2 and 4 spells, and I don't think if I had stacked spelldamage it would have made a huge difference to that anyway. :D

I was asking mostly for curiosity's sake if there was an accepted ratio found via theorycraft along the lines of this one for feral druids comparing STR and AGI http://druid.wikispaces.com/ToskksDPSGearMethod .

I should be in reasonably good shape as I've been farming up mats and cranking out spellcloth for Spellfire and Spellstrike since I leveled tailoring shortly after hitting OL. I'll have enough mats to 2-3 pieces as soon as I hit 70 and I can always break out my hunter to farm faster and more easily if I really need to. :p

There's not a golden ratio, but instead a comparison of values based on each piece of gear.

Import yourself from the armory and enter your spec, then scroll down. Use the values it gives you for comparison to make everything on gear you're comparing into a "Damage Equivalent". Once you've done that, you now have yourself a fairly accurate way to decide which piece is better for you.
