My pally is newly respecced to prot. I have half my T4 gear and the rest are kara epics. I have about 330 spell damage and 524 defense.

Q: Should I have 2% threat increase or spell damage on my gloves?

Q: Do I have enough spell damage for Kara, Heroics and ZA?

1. threat

2. you have more than enough spell damage for those instances.

Are you uncrushable? You should link your armory so we can get a look-see

Granted you aren't in your tanking gear.. but with what you've got on you have a 12.39% chance of being crushed by a raid boss WITH Holy Shield up. The base chance to crush is only 15%, which means you've hardly cut into that at all. Even with the gear changes that you noted, you aren't going to overcome a difference of 12%. Possibly if you used a Defense/Avoidence trinket instead of that Autoblocker (not the greatest Paladin trinket in the world) but I couldn't say for sure.

Tier 4 gear is also very poor in general (except the shoulders) for a tanking Paladin. It can be great to fill in a few slots when you're actually a healer and want a tanking set however. You're LOADED on Defense when you should be looking for Block Rating (not Block Value) on some pieces. Also, straight up Dodge wouldn't hurt. Yea, defense contributes a fair chunk towards pure avoidence (almost on par with Dodge) but there's lots of gear at that itemization level that gives valuable stats with a little bit of Dodge as well, and with your current Dodge you'll be putting the healers OOM pretty quick :D

As for your earlier questions.. Yippers, Jack's right.

20 Spell Damage will yield about 12.6 Threat per Second. 12.6 is 2% of 630, which means if you're able to generate 630 Threat per Second (which is easy for a Blue-Geared level 70 Paladin even) 2% Threat will yield MORE threat than 20 Spell Damage.

And yea, you have WAY more than enough Spell Damage for Kara and Heroics, and you've got enough for most groups in ZA. That won't change the fact that you're:

1. Putting your healers OOM much faster than needed
2. Vulnerable to hits that will COMPLETELY ruin your day against Prince or any boss in ZA except for Nalorakk and Halazzi (can't crush)
3. About 2000 HP low (in current gear) for reliable service against ZA bosses (though I do admit with great healers and a bit of luck you can be successful there with that much HP)

In other words.. Threat isn't a problem for you (at least in terms of gear) -- Survivability is.

FWIW, i did the +8 def to my gloves. the tier sets seem to come with plenty of spell dmg.

anyone toy with removing 5 pts out of anticipation after being maxed on defense? maybe grab imp JotC and PoJ instead?

I find it works better to move the pts out of toughness(4-6% armor is 600-900 armor depending on gear lvl, less if you aren't in t5/t6 gear) than out of anticipation and regem for stam/avoidance instead of def. My current spec for instance: 0/43/18 , although this is tailored for hyjal tanking when i'm in 700+ block value gear, feels a little squishy for mting, although i did just fine in za with it last week.

Also since no one mentioned the OP's spec i will: 14/47/0 is viable as an OT only, absolutely sucks as a MT spec. Giving up cheaper and faster seals/judgements, as well as 5% pure avoidance is pretty tough to replace, esp at your gear lvl.

You have enough spell dam for kara, but i wouldn't try to mt anything past opera and only then after you change your spec to 0/49/12 or a very similar variant.

I hadn't even checked the spec.. but the lack of Deflection explains alot. I just could fathom how you'd have such low avoidence with that gear but throw in that 5% and you'd be (still low) much closer to the mark.

Don't pull your posts like that. You obviously had questions, and we are here to answer them. And even if you feel like you've been answered, there are other people out there who can look at the post and get their questions answered as well.
