The thing about being a druid is that you start out at level 1 with essentially caster/healer form. You go 10 quick levels and then you get bear form, which is pretty slow killing but more survivability.

As someone who has just recently leveled two Druids past level 10, those nine levels did not go by fast. In fact, I've never spent so much time leveling to level 10 as I have on the Druid. Even Paladins level faster than that. You don't have the mana pool to spam spells, but you don't have any melee special attacks, so basically what you do is auto-attack and heal yourself until the target dies.

I consumed more water in those nine levels than I am ever going to do again. Ever. Innervate should seriously be a level 1 spell with a 10-second cooldown. So frustrating.

At level 10 you get Bear form and even though you only have Maul and auto-attack, your DPS actually goes up compared to casting spells and auto-swinging with your staff or mace or whatnot. Your DPS is increased while in your tanking form. If that isn't pathetic...

Then at level 20 you get Cat form and now you're on par with every other class again. Once you get Dire Bear that's when you pass them and at level 50 when you get Mangle the game becomes EZmode.

Levels 1-10 as a Druid is by far the worst leveling experience I've ever had and I've played every class. Levels 10-20 were okay, but frustrating nonetheless because the additional armor and health in Bear form is so little it has almost no effect. Only reason to stay in Bear form is because it's better DPS than Moonfires and auto-attack in caster form.

I'm never going to level up a Druid again. Ever.

This is completely true. Although I find that bear and cat are about equal when you first get them. Once cat form gets the passive movement speed bonus and some better finishers, then it shines. Rip is subpar until you get Mangle.

I had to respond to this- it's not a good troll, but it annoys me for one reason (Galenmoon already mentioned it). If you have a problem with a player who has awful DPS as a Moonkin, the correct thing to do would be:

  • Research the class as a whole.
  • Check forums to see if other people have the same issue.
  • Ask in forums if his sub-standard DPS is typical of the class.
  • Try not to generalise an entire class based off of one player's performance.

  • My original assumption in the OP's post would have been that the player must have been bad. If I'd been in groups with several Boomkins (and not just the same player several times) and the DPS had been substandard every time, I would then start making a correlation between Boomkin and bad DPS. There are, of course, other reasons to have lower DPS than other classes.

For example, I was in a party of 5 recently, running heroic Sethekk for my swift flight form quest. One of the DPS (a warrior) kept mentioning my sub-par DPS, and started throwing out DamageMeters after every fight. I got annoyed, and said that I had to DPS, CC, and backup heal- at which point he called BS and said I should be in the top 2 on his DM. The priest that was with us then put his healing meter into chat, and I was number two- the healer was having a hard time keeping everyone alive, so I'd been popping out of Boomkin, healing others, popping back in, CCing birds, and throwing trees any time they were up. No, I wasn't top DPS. However, I was a great utility class that filled in where needed. After that, the warrior didn't have a lot to say- nor did he apologise for being a presumptuous asshat. Smiley: sly

As for why I rolled Boomkin, I originally played a feral druid. By level 40 I was tired of the same old grind- I was going into cat form, stealthing, sneaking up behind someone, and -whack whack whack- moving on to the next victim. My Owlbear was a very welcome change of pace, and I loved being able to cast damage spells and still have points in the resto tree, so I could heal myself better than I could in feral (I'm not saying it's hard to heal as feral, it just didn't work well with my playstyle- and I often waited too late to try to pop out & heal). I haven't gone back to feral since, and have rarely had anyone complain about my playstyle when I'm in groups. Perhaps they're too kind, but perhaps they see my value as a healing-capable critchicken. It's rewarding to see everyone in a group about to die, only to pop Tranquility and save the day.

Edit: added my reason for rolling boomkin.
