Haste or CritFollow

#1 Jun 30 2008 at 1:00 PM Rating: Decent
I have a fire mage 2/48/11 with 25% fire crit already. I'm hit capped for fire so I was wondering if I should start stacking crit or haste with the 3 yellow sockets I have for raiding. Thanks in advance!

Actually its usually a question of spell damage or spell haste, but without knowing what your stats are its hard to say. The crit will usually come with gear instead of being gemmed. After you have about 1000 unbuffed spell damage you should start looking at haste, but if you are under 1000 but you feel you NEED the socket bonuses then I would go haste/dmg gems(reckless pyrestones or reckless noble topaz). If you are under 1000 dmg unbuffed and dont need the socket bonus go all +spell damage. If you are over 1000 unbuffed i would balance haste and damage as much as your mana consumption can take it. Also this is assuming you are gemming up for raiding.

Additionally, I wouldn't bother gemming for haste til you have at least 30-35 of it from gear already.

I wouldnt either unless a yellow socket is worth it for a good socket bonus, then its a toss up crit/dmg or haste/dmg, personally i would go haste/dmg in that case. Other than that i would ignore socket and go +dmg until enough is stacked. Thats why i capitalized only if you feel you NEED the socket bonus, as in the socket bonus will give hit or spell damage in about the same amount you lose on the split gem. Personally if you have to make a yellow and i should have said this before but dont know why i didnt think of it, put in hit/dmg (veiled gem) and change a hit gem elsewhere to full spell damage where you arent looking for socket bonus.

Thanks for the info! I'm at 1108 bonus damage (fire and arcane) unbuffed and 10481 mana with AI. I'm also at 55 haste rating with just gear (-3% cast time). I'm going to replace the Gloves of the Aldor with the Enslaved Doomguard Soulgrips soon which will increase my crit rating by 11 and give an additional yellow socket. I'll gem up Hit Rating to cap back at 164 (fire spec) since I'll lose the 17 hit rating from the Gloves of the Aldor. I'm lucky to have a pyrestone, 3 lionseyes, and a seaspray emerald. I was thinking Wreckless pyrestone and Forceful seaspray emerald for sure but was unsure about the lionseyes...hence my question crit or haste. I didn't want to waste the gems by making a wrong choice. I'm leaning towards haste now. You all think that's the right choice? Here's a link to my armory. Thanks again!

Crit is the stat most casters are least concerned with. As a fire mage you want as close to a 30% crit base as possible. That comes with gear alone usually though and i would never use a gem slot to add to Crit unless its to match a socket bonus of +4dmg or greater. Haste/Dmg gems all the way baby.
