Heroics/Raid HealingFollow

#1 Jun 30 2008 at 11:27 AM Rating: Decent
I just hit 70 not to long ago and have been working on gearing up for raiding. My current stats are 1100 +healing, 20%crit and 45mp5 while casting unbuffed. http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Deathwing&n=Qaliban is the link to my character profile (currently pvp gear is on, but i use Breast Plate of Many Graces and Consortium Plated Legguards.) I know the mp5 is low, but once I get a few more pieces and some enchants it shoulg be fine. I would think these starts are plenty good enough to start running heroics. I have no problem healing regular instances. So the other day I decide to run Heroic Ramps, figure it should be pretty easy. Didn't realize things hit that much harder so first pull the tank went down but that was it. Next he pulled way to many and we wiped, he addmited it was hit fault. Third time one of our squish dps gets one shotted right off the bat and the beast master fel orc (can't remember the exact name) called some hounds I couldnt keep up and we wiped. On the way back I got kicked. I didnt think I did anything wrong, might not have. When i had to spam Holy light i used divine illumination, popped a potion, all that good stuff. Still, I get the feeling healing in heroics and raids is much different then regular instances and was hoping to get some tips. Any suggestions on how to heal effectively would be appreciated.

Well I don't think the strategies are really what's hurting you. I wasn't there while you are healing, so I don't know specifically what you were and weren't doing. You use DI, you use potions, and seemed to be on top of things, but you just couldn't keep up. The best advice is to just keep gearing up.

There is a debate on which is harder, Kara or Heroics, either way you feel, they are still pretty close, and you should have kara-entry (or near kara-entry) gear for when you start heroics. There is the Pre-Kara Holy guide that Dil created that should help you in gearing up. Some of the gear he mentions are from heroics themselves, but almost for every slot he has non-heroic and/or non-badge loot that you can pick up in an instance or a quest. Just looking at your reputations I know you haven't done enough of them to gear up properly. By the end of it, you should have another 200 or so healing and another 20mp5 at least.

Not saying it isn't possible to go through heroics, with an awesome tank and awesome dps that can carry you through it, you would be able to complete it, but for an average group, some of which aren't geared enough either to do heroics, you will struggle like you showed here.

Edit:

Actually, YJMark updated the Pre-Kara Holy FAQ in the wikibase, which you can go to here.

I still remember my first heroic VERY CLEARLY. It was a complete eye opener. Honestly, I was spamming Holy Light most of the time. Thank goodness we had good DPS so that I didn't go oom before the fight was over. I think I used about a dozen mana pots.

Honestly, I was at +1200 heals and 20% crit, and it was still hard to keep up (MP5 isn't as useful in heroics since the fights are fairly short).

1) You really need to get used to very large burst damage. Also, learn which mobs hit the hardest, and you may want to pre-cast heals when fighting them (i.e. start casting early, so that first heal hits right when damage is taken). If you wait until after the big hits, you may fall behind. 2-2.5 seconds can seem like a very long time in heroics, especially as you watch the tanks health drop like a rock.

2) Don't forget Divine Favor. The guaranteed crit is a lifesaver when you are falling behind in heals. I macro'd:

/cast Divine Favor
/cast Holy Light

This allows you to 1 button a Holy Light crit.

3) The DPSers - they can easily get one or two shotted. Have Blessing of Protection on hotkey in case you need to bubble one of them immediately.

4) Pop your trinkets often. Especially early in the encounter. Most fights don't last long, and the first part is the hardest (because multiple mobs are pounding your tank). If you can keep the tank alive for the first part of a fight, you are generally ok.

5) As for Ramps - it is a very hard instance if your tank doesn't know how to pull. There are so many tough-placed adds/pats. With a tank that knows how to pull, it's a fairly easy instance. With one that doesn't.....your in for a lot of corpse runs.

6) Like Cap said, try to get some gear to give you a bit more +heal. +1200 is the recommended min (not average). Then, load up on all the healing buffs you can (i.e. Fish Sticks, etc...) It will give you that extra "oomph" that you need.

Good luck, and just keep plugging away. You'll do just fine. The first heroic is always a surprise :)

Yeah, it's a surprise for healers and tanks, doing normals I was used to tanking and seeing my health go down gradually, not too much at once. Then I stepped into heroics and my health turned into a wave pattern, going up and down and up and down... very scary on my end.

That spot with the patrolling beastmaster who calls the hounds right before the you turn the corner to the first boss is my least favorite pull in H Ramps. Losing a DPS is almost a given there, in my experience. All other things being equal (and only knowing your side of the story) you were probably kicked unfairly. The thing is, it's fairly easy to pick on the healer, particularly when he's in gear like yours. You don't *look* good at first inspect and it's likely to be held against you.

Cap and YJ's comments are right on the money, as one would expect. The only other suggestion that leaps swiftly to mind is to focus on communicating better. Heroics are much, much smoother if you're using Vent, teamspeak, or even in-game chat. If your tank pulls too many adds, for example, he's not very likely to mark them up with raid icons and then type out new CC assignments/kill order. A good group is able to react quickly to CC that gets resisted or DPSers that pull aggro. On the bright side, you will get better with experience. Try going with friends or good acquaintances and you'll likely have better luck.
