well, I tanked the prince for the first time last night, and I did just fine till phase two, at which point I popped shield wall, and an armor pot an told the DPS to step it up. No luck.

shield wall faded and a couple seconds lader, my life went too.

My question is this - Is it reasonable to hope that the DPS can get him out of phase two in 10 seconds?

because my guild's healers are a little under-geared, we've been going with the 3 healer-5 DPS approach, but I've been thinking about changing that.

anyway, any suggestions would help.

Here's my armory link, I've been thinking about taking a point out of unbridled wrath and putting that into imp. shield wall, but I really don't know what else I could do (better gear of course, but my ability to get that is limited by reality).

P.S. I notice that neither of the two builds posted have imp. defensive stance, can someone give me a good reason why I shouldn't need to reduce spell damage taken? none of the mobs in Kara are reflectable, so it seems like my only viable option...

For prince, your gear is ok. I would imagine your issue is your healers. However, I am of the mindset that as a tank I don't want to rely on healers being well geared when I could be overgeared and make it easier. So, heres what I suggest doing first:

It looks like you have ran kara plenty, with lots of your gear being drops. Not sure if you have Moroes Pocket Watch or not, but that could be a huge upgrade. And its something else you can pop during phase 2. If you don't have it, don't sweat, its just a matter of time.

I would imagine you have a lot of badges from the kara runs, so try to do a bunch of heroics until you can get Chestplate of Stoicism. I had the same chest you do and upgraded to that one, and it was very huge. It is the last chestpiece you will need until black temple. I even threw a +15 stam gem in it, but then I had the extra 350g to do it.

PVP for the s2 shoulders. The armor is huge, plenty of stam, and crit rating helps with hate.

Do the arcatraz key quest. You can solo most of it, and it is easy to get groups for herioc bot and heroic arc, so those parts are simple too. The reward is a great belt to start with. The quest line starts with THIS QUEST.

If your dps is getting prince out of phase 2 in 10 seconds, your dps is likely over-geared for the instance (and for you to hold threat over them doing that means you are too!)

The key to surviving prince is not just good healers and good communication between the healers, combined with spamming shield block. It's about not getting hit by multiple crushing blows that eat through the shield blocks.

The thing about Prince is that he really is an avoidance fight. Make sure TC and Demo are on him 100% of the time. Your OT should make that their #1 priority above all else. Stack dodge and parry for this fight. Block value is nice, but if you're eating up blocks eventually crushing blows will get through. Maximize the chances to avoid any damage at all by maximizing avoidance for this fight. If you've got Moroes' Lucky Pocket watch, fire that thing off at the start of the fight and keep it going whenever it's up.

You're gear's not bad at all, but some easy badge upgrades for you would be getting Silk's Cloak for the dodge, the ring of the stalwart protector, the and the bonefist gauntlets, maybe consider getting the earthstorm meta-gem that adds 10% block value (the only meta gem for tanks that scales with gear!)

You can get through prince trying to absorb his damage, but it's a much easier fight if he's just missing you all the time.

what ^ said.

stack avoidance for this fight.

i wear my avoidance set for tanking prince (~47% dodge+parry unbuffed). the highlights of the set include battlescar boots, moroes' trink, commendation of kaelthas, the sun eater and barbed choker of discipline. you can also take up engineering for the T5 equiv helm, it's got 38 dodge on it iirc. don't forget to use the tanking book before you fight him also.

you can pick up tons of avoidance from badge gear. the cloak, chest, belt (iron tusk girdle) and unwavering legguards/sunguard legplates are all monstrous avoidance items.

Looks like your in a fresh progression guild. And like in most progression guilds, the tank has effective health maximized. Make sure you have imp tclap, and maximum demo shout (2/5 w/o a warlock CoR, 5/5 w/ a warlock CoR). If a shaman is in group, have them drop GoA not WF.

Stop socketing for socket bonus. 12 sta gems in every socket, except those goggles, put in a sta/def gem instead of def. Change your chest chant to 150+ hp.

Respec. 10/7/44 is better. If you need anger management, which you shouldn't. 8/10/43 is better if you have a warlock who'll put CoR up.

Your roster has only one higher ranked player specced resto. A druid. You want more shaman/priest/palidan healing, splash direct heals. Your pali is specced prot, your two shamans are specced elemental, and your priest is shadow.

::EDIT::

Effective Health = Avoidance too.

hello concolor, yeah i agree. 8 parry gem is not what you should go for at this stage * in gloves, pants, and booties *
smack 3x 12 sta * blues * or regal nightseye * +4 dodge and 6 sta... then again i think you should be able to take prince's beating if your healer were top notch. read about gems ;D and dont think about parry as a stat that you need. thats my oppinion.

thanks for the input folks, even those of you who didn't look at my armory page (have had the goggles and slikk's cloak for a while)

I'll have to look up gems I guess, cause some of those gems look like something I could only get with badges, or more gold than I have <:(.

Going to be running heroics as soon as I get my girlfriend's druid some good healing gear.

(also, we recently got a pally with 2034 +healing :D)

we tried the prince again with me on my hunter and our pally tank tanking him and my hunter DPSing (pally insisted a couple raiding guilds had said he had more survivability and I wan that bow for meh hunter) and we didn't have much more success - terrible infernal drop luck, and a healer standing inside shadow nova range >.<

ah well, maybe this week

Thanks again for the help :)

Once you get the actual tanking of prince down. And the healing. It's mostly a luck fight. Hopefully your melee doesn't lag at the wrong time, your ranged dps/heals don't get stuck in an infernal and miss an important heal or have to reduce dps while maneuvering.

Hows are your groups situated? Tank in a corner? Melee dps against a wall when not debuffed? Healers/ranged dps placements good?

We always liked having the tank in the corner... from the door/entrance, to the right. And have them pull prince to them, and run to the corner. melee when not debuffed, would just go to princes side when he's about to blast everyone miles away, and instead just get put down right in the same place, thus lessening the dps loss. Ranged dps/healers would have 2-3 specified locations pre-defined (goto a, b, c, d, etc...) for when an infernal dropped. When an infernal dropped ontop of the tank, we pulled the tank to near the doorway, another little corner spot is available, again to the right of the doorway looking in. Where melee can go up against a wall when not debuffed. Just make sure your healers know you're moving.
