Advice on gear & talentsFollow

Hey all.

Well i just started playing the game last week after 6 months off. And finally i got into a good raiding guild. We went to Kara on my first day there, and we cleared the first 4 bosses and called it a day. My gear was significantly lower then, but still i'm having problems.

First off, here's my armory:
Armory

Now, i know my hit rating is very low. And the gem in my bracers was purchased by mistake and i intend to replace it with +8 hit. I'm also intending to farm for the Belt of Blasting as the one i have at the minute was only to rid myself of a green. Apart from that though, i think my DPS is pretty good. I can usually keep up with fire mages of similar gear or even beat them. But my guild wants me to get my +hit higher. I know i missed the set bonus on the shadoweave set, but there really aren't any good gems and it seems like a fair trade off. I checked BeImba! and it says i'm ready for ZA with a PvE score of 172. But still i want more hit, just dunno how much i need or how i can get more.

I'm also trying to rid myself of the frozen shadoweave set as i'm sick of being stuck on frost. I'd like to switch around or at least have the freedom to without losing a lot of dps. Should i try and replace this with the new badge gear?

And for my build, should i stick to what i have or should i go more arcane? I'm not sure if clearcasting would be worth giving up so many points in frost for. Also i've read that after 800+ spell dmg or so that full frost is ok for raiding.

Thanks for reading. Sorry if i haven't made sense, it's 5am here :)

Make sure to avoid the mistake I see a lot of folks making and get the Spell Hit one. I'm sure that's what you were gonna do, but I had to make sure.

Sadly, a green belt probably would have been better than what you're wearing. Smiley: frown

The good news: As frost, you need less +hit than fire mages. Due to a bug, frostbolt gets a bonus 3% hit from elemental precision. Which means you only need 126 compared to their 164. Now, there are several different possible solutions to getting you to where you need to be. First of all, I'd suggest a +hit enchant on your gloves. That will certainly put you a lot closer(either way, Spell Damage or Hit are the best glove enchants). As would getting the helm glyph from the Sha'tar(you'll need to get to Revered with them to do it, though). Add in that Belt of Blasting and the switched out gem, and you should be pretty close to cap at that point.

Alternatively, consider getting some Spellstrike gear(Helm and Pants). Spellstrike is just better than Battlecast in all ways save stamina(one of them being that it has a good amount of hit on it).

Absolutely. The new badge gear is ridiculously good. But you're gonna have some trouble finding replacement shoulders. Consider running Heroic MgT for some new ones.

For pure raiding, you can easily afford to give up about 17 points in frost(will allow you to get clearcasting and 2/3 Arcane Meditation for massive mana efficiency and Arcane Impact for more AoE viability). That said, if you also PvP, you'll be giving up some of the more useful PvP talents and you can live without the arcane for raiding if you want. I would, however, suggest dropping at least 2 points into Arcane for Arcane Subtlety. 40% reduced threat when using Arcane Explosion is a very, very good thing.

I haven't gone and looked around yet (I'm going to be picking up my mage again)... but why exactly is that? I would most likely have been one of those people picking up a +Spell Hit gem instead of just a +Hit gem.

Thanks =)

Umm he meant you need to get the + spell hit not the + hit gems

Reading it again, I can definitely see how you could make that mistake with even a little too little caffeine in your system.

Thanks for the great advice Poldaran...Really appreciated...

Well i've had a constructive day gear wise. I farmed mats for the belt of blasting, but still have yet to get gems for it as the horde ah sucks. Also got a new helm from Kara which greatly improved my hit rating. So i'm now sitting on 916 unbuffed spell dmg and 111 hit rating. I'll work on getting enchants, such as subtletly for cloak, hit rating for gloves & replace the crit gem in my bracers. I'm gonna be saving up boj's for a new robe and hopefully ween myself off frost :)

Any other advice on my current setup?

Thanks :)
