Tanking pre-lacerateFollow

OK keeping this simple.

On a single target; do I get more threat by spamming Maul inbetween Mangle cooldowns, or Swipe?

Any other tips also appreciated. I hear it gets a bit easier after Lacerate, but that's at 68, I'm currently 54 and enjoy tanking, would just like to be a little better at it.

Maul because it adds damage to your regular attack will cause more threat than swipe will because swipe has a small base damage value that makes it useful for tanking multiple targets. Your best bet is to spam maul and if you have enough range use swipe as well (correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that maul is similar to heroic strike, it doesn't trigger GCD).

im going to add a caveat to that.

the general rule of single-target tanking is to always keep mangle and FF(feral) on cooldown. if your rage gen seems to be "ok" (as in you can keep mangle on cooldown but never seem to have more than say, 30 or 40 rage) then add in swipes periodically (assuming they wont break CC). swipe costs less than maul because maul uses up your next white hit, so any rage gained from that hit (unless you crit, which is an automatic +5 rage gain) is lost. therefore, if youre in a low-rage environment, using maul may hinder your ability to generate rage, which may hinder your mangle usage (and mangle is your biggest threat move).

should your rage gen exceed your ability to use swipe periodically plus mangle every time its up, then begin adding mauls in. should your rage gen outpace your ability to spend it by spamming maul, swipe and mangle, then youre probably going to die.

It doesn't matter. Druid tanking is an absolute nobrainer. I tanked every instance from Uldaman to Shadow Labs (tanked that one without CC at level 69) and it was beyond easy. You don't even need to really think about what you are doing, as a bear tank in the 60s will be doing so much damage that your group mates won't stand a chance of pulling aggro.

Just spam swipe, mangle, and maul. The order makes no difference.

The order makes a difference. Mangle, maul (unless rage-starved) and swipe. If you open with a swipe, the mage is gonna pull aggro with the first fireball. Swipe is a rage dump on single targets and an excellent way to hold multiple targets and make your healer's life easier by proccing ILotP.

Feel free to demo roar too. That generates a small amount of hate and also makes your healer's life easier. If you have multiple targets you can try pulling w hurricane, or starfiring the second mob and then moonfiring the first as they run toward you, to keep hate on both. It does get incredibly easier w lacerate (which is at 66).

Thanks for the advice. I've really been underusing FFF. Only been using it to pull up to now, and I keep forgetting that I can turn into a caster and throw some inital aggro around before actually commencing tanking. So thanks for that.

You should also reapply FFF every time it's up. A little extra hate from the mob and a little less armor on your kill target never hurt anyone -- at least while the healer's still alive.
