What key bindings do you use?Follow

#1 Jun 27 2008 at 1:16 AM Rating: Decent
My hunter's been 70 for a while and I've just started doing some BG again but I've realised I'm severely handicapped in that I still use numbers 1-9 for my most commonly used skills and F1-F8 for other skill.
This means when I want to use a skill I have to look at the icon and see which button it's on before pressing it.

I'm normally dead by the time this happens.

I'm thinking of switching from WSAD to EDSF to give me some more room as well as making macros for shift and control mods.
What key bindings do you use?

From my days of Quake III Arena I've gotten used to bunching up all necessary skills around AWSD. The problem with WoW PvP in comparison is that it is usually filled with quite a few more skills that's necessary depending on the opponent. I've got five number keys in use:

1: Autoshot (I know, but it is useful at times to just toss an autoshot)
2: Raptor Strike/Wing Clip macro
3: Arcane Shot
4: Concussive Shot
5: Multishot

Then I have quite a few letter keys in use:

Q: Hunter's Mark (I don't have time to look for it when I have to remark a Rogue that's blown CloS, or a Druid in cat)
E: Steady Shot/Aimed shot modifier macro. (There are times when the opponent is stupid enough to let you stand still)
R: Frost/Freeze trap modifier macro.
F: Mana Drain/DoT modifier macro.
Z: Mount (In BG's and World PvP it can be useful to quickly mount and demount)
X: Feign Death (Useful in PvE as well for a quick Feign)
C: Health/Mana potion modifier macro.
T: AP Trinket/PvP Trinket modifier macro.
G: Snake Trap/Flare modifier macro.
V: Intimidation/Bestial Wrath modifier macro. (Scatter/Silencing shot modifier macro when MM)

I'm writing this from memory, so there might be something I missed. I seem to recall using the >< button for something as well as |. But that might be old Q3A reflex buttons. Also, I know I could use more modifier macros, but this setup has served me well. Some of the more remote buttons (TGV for instance) have been duplicated on mousebuttons for fast use, and I do move the various macros around as I decide something is more important in this fight than other things. Something some people don't realize: The mousewheel counts as a button too, so bind any spammable macro on that.

That's not a bad setup north, I think I could get used to that.

Also it would be good to stop me clicking, I've become a clicker with a few weeks of easy dailies, need to strict up my click usage!

Movement Keys-ESDF (Yes, when I started keybinding I wanted to be like Megatf)
Aspect of the Viper-1
Scare Beast-Shift+1
Auto Shot-2
Wing Clip-3
Hunter's Mark-4
Pet Feed/Revive/Call/Mend Macro-Shift+4
Pet Attack/Pet Follow-5
Pet Totem Killing-Shift+5
Concussive Shot (Focus/Mouseover Macro)-Q
Arcane Shot-W
Scorpid Sting-Shift+W
Rapid Fire-Shift+R
Steady Shot-T
Aimed Shot-Shift+T
Viper Sting (Focus/Mouseover Macro)-A
Viper/1H Weapon Switch Macro-Shift+S
Warstomp-Shift+D
Hawk/2H Weapon Switch Macro-Shift+F
Scatter Shot (Focus/Mouseover Macro)-G
Multi Shot-H
Rank 1 Multi Shot-Shift+H
Mount-J
Silencing Shot (Focus/Mouseover Macro)-Z
Frost Trap-V
Freeze Trap-Shift+V
PvP Trinket-F1
Battlemaster Trinket-F2
Feign Death-Mouse 4 (Front Arrow)
Feign Death and Drink-Shift+Mouse 4 (Front Arrow)
Flare-Mouse 5 (Back Arrow)

Haste Potions-Shift+N
Fel Mana Potions-N
3:2-B
1:1-Shift+B

The scatter and silence disappear when I respec to SV for raiding though, and if I'm using my brooch or any /use trinket, it replaces the PvP medallion. I haven't levelled LW yet, so I don't have drums keybound.

Edit: I have my vent PTT set for when I push down my scroll wheel. On another note, I have a Logitech G15, yet I find that the macro buttons are too far away to be useful in PvP, and that using them to make a shot rotation macro that works by holding them down is a bannable offense. I think that I wasted a ton of money on the keyboard, as I don't even look at the little screen since I'm not some 5 year old typing that has to look at the keys (or some loser who can't regular type for some reason).

Not very long actually. Since I started playing using 1 to =, I eventually started doing PvP/Arena, and found that keybinding only to 5 was far easier to play with, so I had to find alternatives for 6 to =. Then, like most people, I keybound around WSAD, which was fine, until I got to higher ratings with a druid friend. Then I needed some more keybinds, for SV and MM specifically, so I just moved to ESDF, and keybound in around a day, and got used to it.

heck I get confused when I am clicking on the skill that has a picture associated to it, I'd never remember what I bing to what.......unless I make up little avatar pics for each key binding and glue it to my keyboard (just came up with that and I must say.....BRILLIANT!!!!!)

G15 Keyboard:
G1 - Pet Attack
G2 - Pet Follow (pulls my pet back to me, stops attacking)
G3 - Steady Shot Macro (spams j key)
G4 - Arcane Shot (spams J key)
G5 - Tranq Shot (spams Z key)
G6 - Feign Death (spams f key)

X - Macro that hits Bloodlust Brooch and Bestial Wrath. Modifier (ctrl/alt/shift/etc.) + X activates those two, plus Rapid Fire
G - Macro that hits flying mount if in outlands, ground mount if in azeroth, and dismounts you if mounted

1 - Wing clip
2 through 0 Various abilities just in case macros stick or what not
- key - Super Health Potion
= key - Fel Mana Pot

Got a G15 keyboard too, but the macro section of it is pretty much not used for anything. If I make a macro there, it's a trade/guildmessage/generic reply macro. It's otherwise too far from my AWSD to be useful for anything. Certainly nothing in combat. PvE? Perhaps. PvP? Hell no.

1: wing clip
2: auto/steady or 3:2 rotation
3: arcane
4: multi
5: trinket
6 rapid fire
7: trinket 2
8: Aimed shot

A: target focus
shift + A: set focus
ctrl + A: clear focus
S: scare Beast
shift + S: hunter's mark.
D: Viper Sting
shift + D serpent sting

Q: strafe left
W: Move backwards
E: strafe right
shift + Q: turn left
shift + E: turn right
shift + W: Move forward

F1-5: target enemy 1-5 in arena.
F: Assist
shift + F: assist focus.

And besides that, all other functions are spread over 9 through = and ctrl/alt/shift 1 through =.
I have pretty much everything bound to a key, I'm just searching for a good looking cooldown mod so i can completely hide all my bars.

edit: I forgot, I also have my Hearthstone at shift + H :P

Hey North, i like the look of your keybindings, and i think i'm going to try them out. Just wondering though what your modifier macros are?
If you could either copy and paste them, or perhaps link a tutorial on how to make them, i'd appreciate it. Thanks a lot.

here's a link to a guide some rogue wrote on how to go about setting up keybindings. It's obviously written from a rogues POV but it focuses on the method and is very useful if you're having trouble figuring out where to start.
