Retribution Palidans and weapons!Follow

#1 Jun 26 2008 at 9:30 AM Rating: Default
I've got a few questions pertaining to leveling as a retribution lolidan and the weapons to use. Several of my guild mates (this is in a leveling guild for now) have told me that Retribution=2HANDER and does not equal 1hander and shield. Currently, at level 14, I am using a nice2handed sword with plus 3 Agility and plus 3 Strength. Obviously at lower levels you can swing a big sword and still level pretty well without much downtime.

Anyhow, when I leveled my Shaman I found that using a 1hander and shield was far more efficient on my downtime than wielding a 2hander, especially when I hit outland. However, Palidans have plate, which may equate a "shield"/armor equivalent to using a shield with a Shammy; obviously having more DPS with the Palidan. Based on the reading from the FAQ, it said that your weapon is your primary damage, which seems to be very apparent so far, even at leel 14.

My question then is, should I be using a 2hander exclusively, or should I use a shield and 1 hander; or should I be sure to keep a set of both for easier mobs?

Thanks, I appreciate all of the comments I can get.

You can keep a shield and weapon for longer fights, such as elite fights or group quests that you wish to attempt to solo. Aside from that, you're 2-hander is really going to be the best source of your damage. When you get Seal of Command at 20, it is much more attuned to slow 2-handed damage than 1-handed. A lot of the other Retribution Talents are based on the assumption that you will be using 2-handed weapons.

Instead of opening a new thread.. I'm just going to add my question on to here:

What's a good weapon upgrade for me?

I'm using Vanquisher's Sword with Fiery and Aegis of the Scarlet Commander.

I'm primarily a Ret Paladin, so I need a 2-hander for DPS, but I also want to replace my 1h and shield for soloability. What do you think would be best for me?

UPDATE: I found Doombringer in the AH with Fiery enchant already on it... for only 30g. So I bought it up as quick as I could. You think that's a good deal?

Well, unfortunately it's a little too fast for a goof 2-hander. You want to try to go for speeds at 3.6 or so to get the maximum benefit of SoC. You are 51? You should do the AV quest and get the Ice Barbed Spear. All you gotta do is win one, and you get a lvl 58 (Pre - TBC) quality weapon at lvl 51 for free.

Thank you CapnJack! Thank you tommy! I'll go try to pull that off today, and just toss the sword back on the AH. It'll make me a little bit of money, I'm sure.

Made 70g off the sword, and got my Ice Barbed Spear the same day. Wow, the damage increase is incredible.

Congrats, it will serve you well until you can get outlands gear, in which case you'll chuck it off into a ditch somewhere and grab one of the new greens, that blue sword off the AH, or the blue polearm from Ramps.

I'll pile on, since this is looking like a "What's my next weapon upgrade?" thread. :)

I've got a 37th Belf Paladin, leveling Ret, wielding Bloodspiller with a +5 weapon Damage enchant. It's 10 levels below me, a bit fast, and has no stats even though the proc seems to have a nice rate. I've been checking the AH since 35th for a replacement but I haven't seen anything appropriate for anything approaching a reasonable price.

Any tips on what Instances might be good targets for my time, or what I might hope to find on the AH?

BTW: Fantastic FAQs on this forum.

Ravager from the Armory wing of Scarlet Monastery would be much better then what you have right now.

X'caliboar from Razorfen Downs, though he is a rare spawn, so you can't really count on getting it.

Mograine's Might would be an upgrade for you, although it is certainly NOT optimal for a Ret Paladin. It's too fast, but again, it's still better then your current weapon. Scarlet Monastery, Cathedral wing.

If you can hold out until level 40, there are a couple drops in Uldaman that would be good for a Ret Paladin, and a third that would at least be better then your current weapon: The Rockpounder or Stoneslayer from Archaedas and Grimlok's Charge from Grimlok.

Then there are some good BoE weapons out there, but the odds of getting them to drop are certainly not in your favor, and if you were to see them on the AH they are most likely gonna cost an arm and a leg (minimum) because people buy them for their twinks. Pendulum of Doom comes to mind right away, but I certainly wouldn't spend the time/money to get it if I wasn't twinking.

It's too bad you're a bloody Horde Paladin. The Alliance quest chain to kill the 4 leaders in SM has a great 2H axe as a reward, but the Horde version of the quest doesn't have anything like it.

agree with Maulgak. run a couple instances and you are sure to get a good upgrade. at midlevels the AH is a horrible way to gear since you will outlevel your gear faster than you can buy it. <3 Grimlok's Charge

I am a level 54 Ret Paladin and i am also a Blacksmith. I have the pattern to make the Hammer of the Titans which I cannot use until level 58. Is it worth it to make myself a Hammer of the Titans, or will I get something immediately better once I hit outlands, thus making this too expensive to bother with since it will be obsolete a few levels after I make it? Or, would I be better off making one and then posting it on the AH for a RIDICULOUS amount of money and seeing if someone buys it?

Of secondary importance, I will be spending a fair amount of time doing BGs at 58 and 59 since it is almost impossible for the alliance to win on my server at the lower levels, but we seem to do really well in the 50-60 bracket and I need to build up my honor, so since I will be "stuck" at 58-59 for a while, would this be a good BG weapon?

Lastly, if I DO make it for myself, what enchant should I get on it? I don't want to spend a lot of gold for an enchant, but if there is a relatively cheap one out there that would be good for this weapon, I would appreciate any recommendations.

Any gear that you can make will easily be replacable by outlands greens or blues, which you can buy on the AH. The greens from outlands were made at roughly the same level as Tier 2 epics. So... no, don't bother making it, especially don't bother making it for money either. Who would buy that for a rediculous amount of money when they can get a green that's better than it?

Also, even if you can't win at 70 for whatever reason, you will still grind honor faster than at 60.

Edit: AND once you hit 70 you can do arena, and even if you suck at arena, it's still a free epic every month or so, and you get more the better you do.

Thanks CapJack! I won't bother making it then. As far as honor grinding, on my server in the 50-60 bracket, Alliance almost always wins AV by 400-0 or 500-0, so I have done a few at lvl 54 and gotten like 450 bonus honor for each win (plus 50-100 honor for kills)... Since I don't have any toons that have made it to 70 yet, is 500 or so honor per AV worth my time? When the alliance wins (about 85% of the time), we somehow get the horde down to 0 reinforcements so fast that it only takes like 15 minutes for 500 honor... Is that decent or is it still better to wait until 70?
#17 Jul 01 2008 at 1:31 PM Rating: Good
At level 70 you get more honor points than you do per kill at level 60, you also get more bonus honor in BGs than you do at 60. Also, you can do the repeatable quest to turn in one badge from each BG to gain a decent amount of honor per turn in.

Excellent information again CapJack! I really appreciate it! Sorry to send the thread sideways from its original question... but the info was very valuable!

Thanks for all the advice. I managed to find a Thornstone Sledgehammer on the AH for about 25G, and that was both better and for less than what I had been seeing for a while. I'll try to hop into SM or RFD, but finding Instance runs seems to be more difficult with my alts than it was while I was leveling my main so long ago.

I agree, it is much more difficult then it has been. The reason though: leveling is much faster then it used to be and doing quests is the most efficient way to level. Also I think part of it is most people would rather find a 70 to run them through everything, even if it costs them money, then go through the hassle of PUG growing pains all over again.

Regardless though I wish you luck.

I dunno. I've seen the "Will pay 5g for a run through <random lowby Instance>", and I have to laugh. I can make 100G an hour or more on my 70. There is zero incentive for me to herd a pile of clueless lowbys through any Instance, unless perhaps they are alts of Guild mates. It's a truism that the amount offered for a run though is less that what the same 70 could make grinding golds on their own.

Oh I agree with you there. I have to laugh at all those people too. I was more meaning the ones who, as you alluded to, have guildmates, are alts, things like that. I know I haven't been in a PUG for anything lower then Ramparts with any of my alts for a long time now. I just get my gf or another friend to run me through any dungeons I need, then I do the same for them.

PUGs for any pre-Outlands dungeons have become ssssoooooo bad! Honestly, I don't remember people being so stupid when I was leveling my first or even second toon, but more and more those leveling dungeons you basically have to get someone to run you through because many PUGs will never get to a boss, much less kill it.

I could get into horror stories, but this is already off topic enough ^^
