Mk, we all know Rupture>All for finishers in PvE. (In 99% of cases)

We also know that Rupture does additional damage in accordance with you AP as show by the following:

Wowwiki wrote:

Damage overall:

1pt = Attack Power * 0.04 + 324
2pt = Attack Power * 0.10 + 460
3pt = Attack Power * 0.18 + 618
4pt = Attack Power * 0.21 + 798
5pt = Attack Power * 0.24 + 1000

Damage per tic:

1pt x 4 ticks at = Attack Power * 0.01 + 81
2pt x 5 ticks at = Attack Power * 0.02 + 92
3pt x 6 ticks at = Attack Power * 0.03 + 103
4pt x 7 ticks at = Attack Power * 0.03 + 114
5pt x 8 ticks at = Attack Power * 0.03 + 125

So with my 1741 AP unbuffed a 5pt Rupture should do 1417 over 16 seconds.

Now, my question is does the AP gained from items like my Shard of Contempt and my Shattered Sun Pendant of Might make a difference.

Example: When Shard of Contempt procs I have a total of 1971 AP. If I use rupture with pts while Shard of Contempt is proc'd will Rupture do 1417 Damage as it was without the proc included, or will it include the proc and do 1473 damage?

I don't really understand the damage per tic calculation, but does that happen at the very start when Rupture is used and then remain the same through out the duration, or does the tic damage calculate as it tics, and so it may change over the course of Rupture if my neck or my trinket proc'd in the middle of it.

EDIT: Reread the forumla and figured out what I was doing wrong on the Tic Damage. For a 5pt Rupture the tics should be doing 177 damage each tic over 8 tics without any AP procs. Using the same example of 1971 AP after the proc would it do 184 damage per tic over 8 tics.

Further, if I started out and popped off a 5pt rupture with no procs up(1741 AP) and after 3 tics I had something proc bringing me to 1971 AP would the damage from tics go as follows?

177->177->177->184->184->184->184->184

END EDIT

So my overall question I guess would be if it was worth it to interupt your cycle slightly(nothing big like skipping a rupture or something) to get the extra DPS out of popping rupture when you have an AP boost like from Trinkets, Shaman Talent, Battle Shout etc...

I realize that this isn't the most important of things for maxing out our DPS, and it won't factor in much of the time. But its been nagging at me so I figured why not ask and start up some discussion since the Rogue fourms are looking kinda dead right now.

Thanks in advance for helping to satisfy my curiosity,

AP modifiers are counted if they're active when Rupture is cast. If the AP goes down at a later point, it doesn't matter; the Rupture to deal the same amount of damage.

So the damage and damage per tic are calculated when Rupture is cast?

Thank you mucho, that has been nagging me for the longest time.

Correct, but % modifiers to damage are applied whenever they're active (or inactive). For example, if you Rupture and then Mangle goes up it'll get the damage boost as long as Mangle is up there; on my Warrior, if I have Rend up (lolrend) and then use Death Wish the damage will increase even if I don't reapply Rend.

This is why you try and save your ruptures for when mongoose is up.

It's also why you pop trinkets prior to rupturing; if you pop them during the SnD part of your cycle, you're a ******.
