PvP leveling questions...Follow

I've been playing WoW for a long time but have only played PvE solo. I just created a gnome rogue on a PvP server so I can play with a friend. I'm excited about trying a new class and PvP, and have been reading many of the guides that are available. I think we are going to be doing some BGs rather than arenas, at least that's the plan right now. From a leveling perspective is there anything I need to do differently from PvE, other than trying to avoid high-ganking areas? I am planning to invest in a decent main-hand sword in the early going as it sounds like good daggers are hard to come by. Given that we plan to do some BGs, is any particular build more favorable - I've been leaning towards the 41/20/0 or 43/0/18 builds since they seem to be popular. Thanks.

Hi Veena, I come from a similar situation: started on a PvE server (Alliance), switched to PvP (Now I'm Horde though). I leveled Rogue on both, and the trip from 1-70 on a PvP server isn't as different as you may think.

The one key thing to understand is that you WILL get ganked. It happens. You can always try to duck it by going to less popular areas (Like Desolace) in your early levels, but it will still happen now and again... just don't get too worked up about it.

Stranglethorn, and around Southshore will likely be the worst pre 60, then Hellfire can be a pain once you get into outlands. Besides that it really isn't a big deal. Many of the people you come apon don't want to be ganked either, and will keep to themselves (Though being a gnome, you may attract extra attention... Horde hate gnomes).

As far as a leveling build goes, just stick with combat swords, then respec to what you like for BGs later. Being on a PvP server I thought ShS would be best, as to help avoid being ganked. And though it did help to some extent, it really slowed my leveling down greatly, not to mention that if a "good" 70 wants to kill you when you're 50, they probably will... so just stick with a DPS PvE build and keep at it.

Hi ACEJester,
Thanks for the input. I managed to find a decent mace for next to nothing on the AH (slim pickings for daggers and swords) so that has made killing much faster. I'm almost level 10 (!) so I'll be able to dual-wield soon.

I have a question about ranged weapons. I see little discussion about them in the various guides and wowwike pages. Other than for pulling purposes, are they every really used? Is there any merit to being trained on guns and crossbows?

guns and crossbows, almost never.

but you should try to keep your throwing skill up because youll get deadly throw, which on its own isnt too hot but with PVP gloves it has a silence effect on it (its a ranged silence, basically an anti-mage and anti-lock skill) and its accuracy is dependent on your throwing skill.

you dont tend to use it a lot outside of some situations, but its turned the tide of a fight more than once.
last week in 2s this mage frost nova'd me then used arcane missiles, i had a CP on him so i used deadly throw, silenced his arcane missiles, which also silenced his blink for 3 seconds. vanish -> shs > garrote for 4 more seconds, then my lock partner's felhunter spell locked him and we had him schooled.

Deadly throw is quite nice, however during leveling I would reccomend just getting whatever adds the most to your stats (like a bow with +agi, that kind of stuff), since you won't -- or at least shouldn't -- be using your ranged attack very much while leveling. Try not too worry too much about keeping your weapon skills (that you don't use) balanced up while leveling as when you do end up needing a paticular weapon skilled up, it really doesn't take very long to level anyway.

Also, as far as the choosing the mace on the Auction House goes: that is totally fine. Until you spec for a paticular weapon, you can really just use whatever. Though typically it is still a rule-of-thumb to keep a "slower" more powerful mainhand weapon for your sinister strikes and evis, and a faster weapon in your OH.

If you have any more concerns about weapons or gear, check the sticky at the top of the forum for more information. :)
