Question to the Shadow HealersFollow

I've read many times on these (and other) forums about how Shadow is 'fine' for healing up to Heroics and beyond

Since I planned on healing instances most of the way to 70 anyways, I went the standard 23 points into discipline and then worked my way up the holy tree (currently I am at L59) (to get to the 23/38 Improved Divine Spirit Build)

And I don't even see how that is possible :-/

I say because I've had many (many...) times where the tank cant quite hold aggro (or theres no 'real' tank at all) and/or a dps messes up or a patrol comes by and noone sees it, and I use every last resource I have available (Inner focus and sometimes spirit of redemption) and we just -barely- come out of it alive

The shadow tree doesn't have anything in it that makes healing any easier, and the holy/disc trees both have aggro reduction, mana efficiency and +healing in them

Just wondering how you do it? No PUGS? (meaning: only friends/guildies?) or do you only do instances you are over-leveled for?

Just curious ^_^

Heh, something yesterday made me laugh out loud (In Blood Furnace in a hallway)

The tank goes afk, had been about 30 seconds since he had gone and a patrol is walking our way, but we saw them turn around before so we knew we were out of aggro range

Well, it was just two of them, but there were a bunch of other mobs nearby

I look over at the warrior who is standing there (the same impatiant one who was the first into combat every time before the tank) and think, "Dont you dare...."

And right on queue he shoots the mob and pulls 6 of his buddies along with him

I new i should have been angry but couldn't stop laughing (he apologized and all, and thought it would only pull those two)

PuG;s are great ^_^

Ye.. true.

I have found it very difficult to heal past 60 as shadow.
Mainly in PUG's, with good players its possible .
THats how it is for me atleast.

On the PUG front i have to tell you something funny.

Other server/ other char.
Playing my 45 Drood Boomkin and agrees to heal in a PUG heading for ZF.
The warrior is a noob, have tired to tach her to tank a couple of times, explained the basics before. Keep Aggro jada jada. Shes ok you know, really does here best.

In this PUG there are also 1 Hunter and 2 Rogues.

One of the Hunters says my pet can tank!
Im like, wtf.. we have a plate warrior , why the hell should your crappy pet tank?

Then the same Hunter ask the Warrior if she has any traps ?
Im like, wtf.. Warriors dont have any traps!

Ok Tank tanks, lets go - first pack of three mobs..the rogue pulls the other one runs around like a crazy chicken..the warrior tries to tank something
Im like, wtf and run out.

Ok 2nd attempt...warrior runs out quick to repair (why didnt you do that before) i show the hunter where to lay the trap. are pointing and ****..The rouge pulls again while thet tank is away.
Im like, wtf..Im am never ever again going to do an instance with you again ever.

Some PUG's..just awfull.

My favorite thing to do when I was shadow was to heal an instance, then at the end change into my shadow form. Always good for a few WTFs. I had a healing set i used to heal up until I started Kara, then I respeced Holy. As far as PUGs go, yep great training ground for healing.

My thoughts on the matter are, I keep the tank alive first, me second, dps third. If the dps die, it's their own fault (usually). HOTS are nice to use on the dps, while focusing your big heals on the tank.

The plus side to shadow healing, you can use some of your dps to heal the group from VT/VE. That's always fun.

Come to think of it, I've had the occasional bad PuG elsewhere, but the only ones i completely gave up on and just left because of stupid/(idiotic/mean) groups were in ZF...

The 1st, 3rd and 1 or 2 other times all were similiar experiences to the one you had

I wonder if its a coincidence...

Your group was 1 hunter, 2 rogues and a warrior? Damn... that would suck! (I've been running Blood Furnace lately... "Hey guys... step away from the proximity mine(s). Please? Uh, guys?" BOOM!)

Heh, yesterday (GREAT! pug though to start) the pally tank kept pulling them slightly back over the course of the fight, and at the end there were (4!) proximity mines in a line in front of our group

He goes "Heal me". I look at his health and its full and am wondering why

Then he runs straight through all 4 (BOOMBOOMBOOMBOOM) as I laugh my *** off and spam heal him

Then he says "I Disarm bombs the manly way. With my FACE!"

I thoroughly enjoyed that run

Although I've never healed a heroic as a shadow spec, I have healed every other instance as shadow (14/0/47 raid spec). For the most part it wsan't that hard, having a good tank is key. Now you don't need some epic'd out Sunwell tank, just someone with decent gear that knows what they're doing. The only major problem I had was trying to stay on top of my mana usage. However I'm an alchemist so I don't have any qualms about chugging some mana potions. I believe that healing instances as a shadow spec can "train" you on being more efficient as opposed to doing it with a heal spec.

This. Healing as shadow means you're doubly gimped in PuG's - one it's a pug, and two you're shadow. It makes you an excellent healer. Of course, it also means you have to be able to figure out when you need to pull your weight as a healer and get one of the idiot DPS kicked from the group, or when you should just leave altogether.

I can understand how this would be especially painful, though. After about the first six months of BC, pre-70 instances died on my server and you were lucky to find a group at all, a good one even harder to find. If that happened on your server as well, I would probably just ignore instances all together >.> The other problem might be that my server is a high-pop PvP server, with people rushing to 70 on alts without taking the time to really learn the class (which is a much smaller problem right after an expansion because of the huge numbers of people who actually know what they're doing).

Surely it must be grouping with friends that makes it possible?

My priest was my first ever char, I also levelled with a disc/holy build (but more orientated towards holy damage), I put up with some of the worst pugs and just saw healing through it as a challenge - yeah it was a good education. In Outland I found it easy enough to find groups purely because I was a holy priest, people started paying attention to this fact at this point, they must've done so for a reason. I was still putting up with some rubbish pugs (I was far too polite) and it was more of a challenge than ever to heal, I'm not so sure how I would've got on as a shadow priest - if nothing else I really did need at least those first 2 points in healing focus to get through!

Am levelling an enhancement shaman at the moment, been healing with her a fair amount too due to general lack of healers, it'll be interesting to see when I feel like I can't or don't want to heal any more.

I was frequently able to heal guild groups and some PUGs while levelling to 70. I never have tried healing a heroic as shadow. It just doesn't seem like it'd be a good idea. It was a bit slower going but not impossible.

I was not in a guild 60-70, and my friends list was mostly filled with people that stopped playing. Every run was a PuG for me until I got into a guild about 2 weeks after hitting 70, with the exception of two days of Hellfire and then Coilfang with 4 guys who were in a BWL raiding guild. Like I said, though, with everyone being my level and people actually knowing how to play their class, it was a lot easier >.>

I still need to try healing some heroics as shadow, but I've been horribly lazy on getting gear >.>
