Opinions & Advice for addons and macrosFollow

#1 Jun 24 2008 at 12:14 PM Rating: Decent
OK, I'm a big fan of PvP on my hunter, but I still enjoy doing groups and such. But the way I PvP and the way I PvE are so completely different that I spend 3-5 minutes simply changing my keyboard layout, macro setups, and the rest of those type things. My question is such: Are there any addons or mods that will let me change my keyboard and skillbar setup in a few simple clicks?
I PvP using my mouse to move, and have some central letter keys for attacks and such. No number pad because I play on my laptop. For PvE I prefer using the default setup, and WASD for movement.

Any tips?

I can't think of any addons that change your entire setup. Would have been nice though, having an Itemrack for addons/keybindings and all kinds of jazz. However, there is another option. Take copies of your setup files (WTF folder for instance) once you've adjusted to PvP. Then change back to PvE and make another copy of the setup files. When you do one or the other you can just restart WoW with a different setup.

It's slow and quirky, I know. But it beats adjusting and readjusting every addon, keybinding and other setups. Damn I wish I knew of an addon to do that stuff...

Ew. WTF files. Last time I tried messing with those I couldn't see my chat box or action bars. Not cool.

Oh well. I guess I can just keep dreaming.

What North said is the only option I can think of, but I'm not very knowledgeable about addons.
And you wont have to mess with your WTF file, You'll just have to copy it (and your WDB file i think...) when you are set for PvE, paste them in a seperate folder somewhere convinient and then repeat the process for your PvP setup.
It's not really easy or practical, but I doubt that you could make an addon to switch that kind of stuff for you.

Would there maybe be a way to set up a script (not in WoW) to change the files for you WHILE playing? Like a .bat file that does a xcopy from one to the other?

Most of the addons I have let you save settings to a profile. If you do this then you can easily modify your settings in those addons.

My advice would be to style your layout for pvp, and then just use it for pve. In pve all I use are mend pet/steady macro/trinket macro/MD. Maybe a trap for 5 man stuff. That's all of 5 buttons, and with an addon like bartender or bongo's you can have several main bars that you can rotate through, that hold the same keybindings.

I find pve is pretty easy and not dependent on your layout, so customize for pvp and learn to use that for pvp.

For the key bindings, wouldn't CT Bar Mod work? I only use 3 extra rows for key bindings besides the regular bottom bar...and CT allows you to have up to 10 bars out at a time right? Well, unless you use more than 5 bars for your pvp, can't you just pre-make all the key bindings for each bar, and choose in the CT Bar set up which group of key bindings you want to show? I'm not sure if that even works, I never tried it, but it's worth a shot no?

I use Bongos3 and it includes an option to save multiple bar layouts (including keybindings) for each caledner.

I have two, one for PvP and one for Pve, it does exactly what you describe.

If you don't want to use an addon, you can do it long windedly using a script

/script SetBinding("key"[, "command"])

Example:

 SetBinding("W","FORWARD"); SetBinding("SHIFT-E","Frost Trap")
