I just started my mage, and this is my first DPS toon. I've hit level 50 and am totally firespec'ed.

I'm interested in what rotation will give me the maximum DPS?

The damage I'm doing is ok, but I strongly suspect I could do more.

My typical rotation for xp'ing is pyroblast, fire blast, fireball, frost nova (jump back), fireball, fireblast, scorch

Things are usually dead by the second fireball.

But when I go into instances, I need to drop the pryoblast and usually the fireball due to cast times. How do i use the remaining spells to max out my dps?

On Trash mobs - damage doesn't matter. You'll find Ret. Paly's out DPS you because they can start swinging right away. You need to wait a second, then wait for a cast. On most mobs - I think I got 2 Fireballs in.

Here is what I did for the instances before OL.

Open with Fireball, Scorch, Scorch, Scorch... Or - drop in a Arcane Missles.

You want to avoid casting a fireball when the mob has <15%. (that's a rough number, you'll have to figure it out for yourself.) Reason being - by the time it's that weak, your cast time will have taken so long - the mob will be dead or with so little HP that your mana is wasted.

People say not to use your instants too much, but I drop them in to kill mobs sometimes.

On boss mobs - you should load up scorch, them FB a few times, re-apply scorch.... Rinse and repeat. However - your damage in 5 mans isn't usually as important as your CC.

You are fireblasting too early. In fact you should never fireblast until you figure it will be your last cast for atleast 2 sec. For example, you anticipate it will kill them, you don't have enough time for an other fireball until it dies, you are about to move or are on the move. Fireblast starts a global cooldown that lessens your dps since otherwise you would be half way threw a new fireball cast.

Maybe you can try Poly (if target wanders)->Pyro->Fireball->Fireball (or Scorch, depending on how close mob is)->Frost Nova->Jump back/strafe->Fireball->FireBlast (if necessary - target is usually dead by this time).

That rotation usually takes care of most mobs. Of course, throw in a Counterspell for casters, and keep your Mana Shield up (just in case).
