I usually open with mindblast, sw:p mindflay, mindflay then wand until dead. If I am going to use my shield I use that first before casting any spells, if I need it later in the fight again it is off it's cooldown. Sometimes I put on VE, but soloing I don't usually bother with either VE or VT. By the time I loot my corpse I am at full mana so it works for me...but it's a personal preference.
Try different routines and see what works best for you. Some situations call for different strategies. Being able to adapt is going to increase your survivability.

Sadly, I neglected the first aid quest so I'm running around with crappy bandages and that's hurting me. I'm just so lazy about that horrible quest.
I failed that quest three times on the first character I attempted it on, so I know the feeling. However, you can group and complete the quest with another person...you both still only have to save 15 soldiers so it makes it quite a bit easier to do.
I actually did the quest last night on my druid and to my utter surprise I managed to succeed first time. I'm sure being an experienced player you know what to do already, but here are a couple of tips that may help other folks:
1.) Most importantly, have a space in your action bar for the bandages. I put them in my "2" spot, so I could target soldiers with my right hand on the mouse and press 2 with my left hand on the keyboard.
2.) Do a quick check for the name of the soldier. Do the critically injured first, badly injured after that.
3.) Target another soldier to bandage while you are healing your current target. This saves time, so as soon as the bandage finishes channeling on the first soldier you are ready to go on the next.
It's definately worth it, the higher level bandages heal for so much more, saving mana and downtime.
