Does not being able to use ranged weapons really hinder a pally that much?

Not really, 2 of the 3 tree's get a ranged attack with Holy shock/Avenger's shield. You can also do the Linken's boomerang quest for a ranged trinket. Hammer of Wrath is a ranged finishing hit, so it's nice for runners.

The only time you really want to pull outside of instances are when mobs are sitting in camps, but then you remember you're a paladin and can solo the 4 mobs there anyway.

So no, IMO, not getting a bow/gun/throwing weap doesn't hurt us much at all.

I agree with Maara in that it has very little impact in the long run. Since I leveled my Paly long before there was a viable tanking tree I found the lack of range annoying for the first 45 levels or so (until I got Linkin's boomerang). If I wanted to pull I would have to carefully use my body aggro radius to draw 1-2 mobs from camps. This failed a lot and I ended up having some "fun" fights. This may be easier these days with the Prot tree turning paladins into one man armies.

Once you get to a high enough level to get Holy Shock or the "Captain America" shield the lack of range becomes a complete non-issue. Don't let it turn you away from rolling a a paladin. At most it is a minor inconvenience.

The only thing that it really shorts us, is the little bit extra stam you can get from gems and whatnot on ranged weps. Other than that, just like the last reply said, nothing but a minor inconvenience. :)

Yea but warriors need the extra stam. We don't. ;)

Ret pallys gain a little range with Repentance, cheap instant cast 20 yard incapacitate. Only works on humanoids, but it's fantastic for pvp. As a BE, the number of interrupts i have against casters is incredible.

Talking about pvp, before you get those ranged abilities, you are quite vulnerable to being kited by a player good at it, hunter or mage or similar. Breaking line of sight is quite important, as is creatve use of divine shield and being lightning fast with your Blessing of freedom/cleanse.

Just Roll a BE. You'll have a ranged pull from day one. =D

This is why alot of pallies are engineers, well part of the reason. Bombs and missile launchers help, but in instances and raids I'd rather have MD than some puny bomb or anything like that.

Actually, our base health is lower then a Warrior and they generally have an easier time mitigating damage then we do, so I'd have to go with the opposite: Paladins could use stam in that slot more then a Warrior.

Other then that deficiency I can't say that I've ever really been hurt too much by not having a ranged weapon. Would I like one? Hell yes! Only class that can't start with a ranged attack except through talents (Exorcism is limited, don't count) is kinda crappy, but do we need it? No.

Does mages and warlocks lack of melee affect them? yes it does. is it enough reason to stop playing the class? no it isn't. same difference here.

Only problem is our lack of ranged and quick "Get to you moves" or "slow you down so I can get to you" moves makes us very easy to kite. We have several ways of combatting this, but in the long run, if your opponent knows what he's doing, and you make a couple of mis-steps, he can kite you for a very long time and kill you.

Retribution is probably the best spec for getting to kiters (which ironically, is the only spec without a ranged option like Holy or Prot). Their Repentance lets them get to someone, Pursuit of Justice allows them to run faster, and they can do more damage in a shorter amount of time, which is what you need to fight kiters.
