I've just bought a Gut Ripper for my Rogue Alt and am considering getting Mongoose on it, and then the best dagger I can find in the off-hand and enchanting Agility on that, with the aim of levelling to at least mid 50's as fast as I can.
Question 1 (as a Rogue newb), am I wasting my money?
And if I am not (question 2), what's the best spec to choose? Combat with Dagger specialization?
I'd be grateful for any comments.

1. Yes, you are wasting your money with your current plan.
2. Combat Swords is the fastest leveling spec.
Grab Vanquisher's Sword and Sword of the Omen from quests, and then quest grind your way to the mid-50's. You'll get there faster than you would as Combat/Daggers, even with Gut Ripper. Also, you'll have saved nearly enough money to buy your epic mount, just from not getting Mongoose and hopefully re-selling that purple.
If you can get a decent group for Mara, replace your MH with Thrash Blade and your OH with Hanzo Sword (BoE) as you get into your 50's. Those are good weapons until Outlands.

Honestly, low-level purples and blues are wasted on leveling toons. In approximately 2 levels you're going to get a better weapon from a quest. So you're WAY better off selling that purple for some ridiculous amount and saving up for other stuff, like mounts as mentioned above. Please don't be nubsauce and equip that thing that's going to be outgrown in 2 levels.

I acctually made the mistake of having blue items on my rogue near lv 40. At first it was useful because Vanquisher's Sword did some extra damage, but don't neglect green items either. They are stronger than certain blue items.
