second tier protection talents at level 56+Follow

Hi,

I have traveled Fury all the way to Rampage, and am now trying to build Protection to Last Stand. (Armory link in sig: Nyavene).

I have placed my first 5 points in Prot in Imp Bloodrage and Tactical Mastery, so now between level 56-60 I need to place 5 more points in the first two tiers of protection to qualify for Last Stand at 61.

I am in the middle of solo leveling to 70, when I will respec to protection but I sometimes tank in PUGs and guild instances.

What is the most effective location for those 5 points? None of the early protection stuff looks that good to me aside from Shield Spec, but I almost never sword and board even while in tank mode.

Thanks for any advice,

Tanking without a shield is the dumbest idea ever. Shield gives mitigation, without it you take a lot more damage that your healers are going to haveta try and heal through. Unless your full T6 and tanking Heroic Bot with dual glaives, _always_where_a_shield_.

Wow, that's about the rudest response I've ever received. Thanks for addressing the question too.

FYI: when I tank I'm generally over-geared and/or over leveled for the instance. I have to balance maintaining threat/rage vs mitigation. (I'm much more used to Bear-tanking). Specced fury, second weapon helps with both rage and threat in lowbie dungeons.

i'll try to answer your question, but it's a little hard without knowing your motivation. last stand is not really a staple talent - even as a protection warrior, i can say it's kinda nice to have and has saved me a couple times; however, it's not something i would go into the tree just to get. if you want to just spend a few points to help you tank better, forget the prot tree and get improved thunderclap. then put two into improved charge and pick up anger management and now you've helped yourself soloing as well.

but if you have your heart set on last stand - for solo play, you already took the best two talents from the bottom tiers. for tanking, you took the two least important. at this point, i would say toughness is your best bet, because it is straight damage mitigation and will help you both solo and in a tanking role.

if you want to be a good tank when you get to 70, please start using a shield. the white damage from your off-hand is not adding as much threat as you might think. try to tank stuff your level, but if you end up over-geared and rage-starved, then take off your pants, not your shield.

Thank you Marklartank,

My primary motivation is to grind up levels as quickly as possible. I do realize that I'm extremely poorly specced for tanking purposes, but my plan is to respec in the mid-high 60s when I start hitting more high level guild rep instance runs.

So moving to grab Imp Thunder, for the tier 1 Arms talents, I should grab 5/5 in Deflection?

Then filling in that tree to Anger Management would take me to level 66, respec at 67 or so.

Does that make sense?

yeah, deflection is the tier one talent to grab.

i might be biased, having leveled as protection, but it's really a very viable spec to solo with once you have access to devastate. don't be afraid to respec anytime after you reach outlands.

Thanks again.

Is there any point in shield slam while soloing?

Also, as I'm now closing in on level 58, what kind of experiences have other warriors had at that level in Outlands?

I have heard things like: "it's way to hard at 58" in various forums, but my Druid stepped through the portal at level 58, and I didn't find it particularly hard at all. What is the warrior experience like?

i also stepped through at 58, and never went back. died a couple times getting geared up, but no big deal.

since you're asking about SS, i'm assuming you mean after you respec. in that case, the most important tool you have while soloing is devastate. if you have rage left over from spamming devastate, go ahead and mix in shield slam to see how it works for you. for me, it wasn't really worthwhile until i got my shield block value up pretty high (which was well after i hit 70).
